Faces of Freya is the latest release from Play’n Go, a game that’s based around Freya - a goddess from the ancient world. In this Faces of Freya slot review we’re going to take a comprehensive and in-depth look at what the slot has to offer - and if you’d like to try it out for free, you can do so, right here on this page!

Format and Betting Options

Faces of Freya is built around a 5-reel, 3-row format and the game has 20 fixed paylines active at all times. Wins are formed from left-to-right, with winning combinations awarded for lining up 3-of-a-kind, 4-of-a-kind or 5-of-a-kind combos.

You can play Faces of Freya from between 0.20 and 100 credits per spin - ensuring players on all budgets are looked after - and the game’s fully mobile-optimized too, so you can enjoy the action from your mobile devices.

The Faces of Freya

Graphics and Theme

As it becomes easier to build slots using HTML5 we’ve gotten used to seeing crips, clear and high definition slots - and Play’n Go’s games almost always look the part. Faces of Freya is no exception, and the reels are placed on top of a fierce red backdrop, perfectly capturing the feeling of Norse mythology.

While it’s rare to see a female used as a lead character, and we like that Play’n Go has chosen to go against the tide. It’s refreshing to see, what is, otherwise, a fairly male-dominated genre (think Thor, Odin, etc) featuring a female lead instead.

Faces of Freya’s RTP and Volatility

Play’n Go appears to be attempting to target a slightly different audience in Faces of Freya than they usually do - and that’s because the game is built around a medium variance math model. This means that wins are fairly frequent, and fall into the “good but not amazing” range. That being said, it’s perfectly possible to form big wins - you can win up to 5,000X your stake - and just because it’s not super volatile, don’t think you can’t hit decent bonuses and features or enjoy nice base-game hits.

The default RTP of Faces of Freya is 96.2%, but there’s also a 94% version; try to ensure you play the version with the higher return to player to give you a better chance of winning and extending your play time.

Bonus Features

You don’t need to play Faces of Freya for long to realise the game’s almost all focused around the free-spins bonuses - and below we’re going to take a look at what these encompass and how they work.

Free Spins

Landing three of the scatter symbols anywhere in view (and here, we mean exactly three) will activate one of the poorer free-spins bonuses; these are called Spins of Sorcery, Spins of Love and Spins of War. If you manage to land four or five scatter symbols, then you’ll trigger the “super bonus”, if you like - the Spins of Folkvang.

The poorer free-spins bonuses all award you with 6 free spins and various reel modifiers:

  • In the Spins of Sorcery free-spins bonus round, all of the premium symbols can be upgraded to the highest-value symbol - a similar mechanic to that found in Eye of Horus.
  • The Spins of Love bonus sees between 2 and 5 wilds symbols added to the reels before every spin, while
  • The Spins of War bonus awards a random multiplier between 2X and 20X to any wins formed.

It’s the Spins of Folkvang you’ll want to trigger though, as doing so awads you three or four free spins (depending on whether you landed four or five scatter symbols in the base-game), with all the reel modifiers from the other three poorer free spins bonuses active. It’s quite hard to land, but it’s almost always worth the wait, with the bonus round frequently paying an average of 1-300X your stake.

Faces of Freya Review

One thing that Play’n Go is really good at is developing good games on a regular basis - and it’s pretty rare to see the software provider pushing out video slots that we’d deem “bad”. Faces of Freya is yet another good example of what the software provider’s capable of, and everything from the theme, the music to the bonuses and features has been well thought out and designed to maximize your playing experience.

We also think that it’s quite refreshing to see Play’n Go releasing a slot that’s built around a medium variance math model. Most of their games are either super volatile, or super low variance - and something in the middle section is likely to appeal to the more casual player.

Our only real criticism of Faces of Freya is that the game developer has capped the maximum win at 5,000X. Of course, that’s still a decent win for any player - but with other software providers coming out with games capable of paying upwards of 20,000X, we’d like to see Play’n Go continue to push out games with at least 10,000X stake win caps; other than that, Faces of Freya gets the thumbs up from us, and if you’d like to try it for yourself you can play it for free, right here on this page!

Faces of Freya FAQs

Is Faces of Freya a volatile slot?

Faces of Freya ranks as a medium variance slot - meaning it’s somewhere in between a low and high variance machine. What this means, in practice, is that those big wins you get in highly volatile machines are more rare - while the small, frequent base-game wins are a little bigger than in low variance games. Indeed, the game developer themselves rank the slot as 6/10 on their in-house volatility scale, so that should give you some idea as to how the game will play out.

How much can I win?

In the past few months we’ve seen Play’n Go starting to push out games with higher win-potential than most of their older titles; they chose to offer players the chance to win 10,000X their stake instead of their go-to 5,000X - the win cap found in hit games like Book of Dead and Reactoonz. Unfortunately, Faces of Freya takes a bit of a step backward, as its maximum win is capped at 5,000X your stake.

What’s the best free spins bonus?

The Spins of Folkvang bonus round is easily the best feature within Faces of Freya - and while it can take a bit of time to get to, it’s usually well-worth the wait. That’s because all of the reel modifiers from the previous three levels are present, and while you only get three or four spins, you’re usually going to end up walking away with a pretty sizable win.

What is the RTP of Faces of Freya?

Like most Play’n Go slots, Faces of Freya comes in flexible RTP settings. This means that online casinos and online gambling operators have the choice to choose which RTP setting they want to offer their players. The default RTP of Faces of Freya, however, is 96.20% - which isn’t bad - but try to avoid playing the 94% version of the game as you’d be surprised how much of an impact this reduction in RTP can have on your gameplay.
