Origins of the comic theme
Serialised comics containing funny adventure stories were first published in the late 19th century, with titles such a Dandy and Beano following in the early 20th century. Hot on their footsteps were the graphic novel-style comics such as Superman, the first globally famous comic character, later joined by Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and so on. These serialised comics were the descendants of the short satirical strips that appeared in magazines and newspapers as early as the 18th century; in fact, comics have existed in some form or another for thousands of years, with some saying that the Bayeux Tapestry was an early form of this type of storytelling.
The first comics tended to satirise culture, society and politics, whilst the comics of the 20th century turned their attention to creating heroes and villains. It is these comics from famous publishers such as DC and Marvel that have truly captured the imagination of millions of people worldwide. The characters from these publishers now appear in novels, films, computer games and - of course - slot games.
Comic slots
When comics are brought to life in slot games, the games tend to have a playful adventure theme with the good versus evil narrative running throughout. Many of the major slot developers have tried their hand at creating slot games with a comic book theme, with top titles including Jackhammer and Jackhammer 2, both from NetEnt. These games are based on the Marvel villain Jackhammer, who first appeared in the 1970s. He never had a title role, instead appearing in Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy. With the superpower of super-strength, it is little wonder that this lesser-known character was chosen to create a leading slot game. The theme of Jackhammer combines comic book graphics with pop art, crime drama and a touch of romance. The reason for the popularity of this game is the clever reel table style - designed to look like a page from a comic book, it is one of the most eye-catching reel tables around. Other popular titles include the multi-bonus featured Wonder Woman and the stunningly cinematic Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, both from Playtech.
Unlike the more serious historic, magical, fantasy or nature-based slot themes, the comic book theme is squarely aimed at slots players looking for a little light-hearted fun. Games in this category tend to have superior graphics in comparison with other games and often excellent cinematic imagery. With so much adventure to draw on, look out for super-powered features and thrilling plots.
