Introduction
Ask any regular slot player what one of their favourite games is, and there’s a strong chance a large number of them will say Raging Rhino. It’s one of the most successful video slots ever made, and it’s found across thousands of online casinos as well as land-based casinos, bingo halls, arcades and bookies throughout the UK and other parts of the world. Some versions of the game can even be found in land-based casinos in Vegas!
After WMS released Raging Rhino Megaways around a year ago, they’re now back with another installment, Raging Rhino Ultra. While, on the face of it, Raging Rhino Ultra may not look any different from the original there’s quite a few new additions - mainly surrounding the bonuses and features - and in this review, we’re going to give you an in-depth look at what you can expect from the new game. First, let’s take a look at the game’s design, and betting options.
Format and RTP
Like the original, Raging Rhino Ultra is set against a neon-like backdrop with purples and yellows representing the african desert. There’s a giant Rhino placed on the left-hand-side of the reels, and all the game’s control buttons can be found on the right-hand-side of the screen. You’ll find yourself able to spin from between 0.40 and 20 credits per spin, and the game’s RTP comes in at a fairly decent 96.20%.

Raging Rhino Ultra’s Symbols And Payouts
Original Raging Rhino fans will be pleased to learn the paytable in Raging Rhino Ultra is almost identical to the original - and aside from a few graphical updates, everything remains identical.
There are, in total, 11 paying symbols in Raging Rhino Ultra, the lowest-paying of which are all playing card values, including 10, jack, queen, king, and ace. WMS also use the ‘9’ in their games, which, unsurprisingly, is the lowest-paying symbol on the reels.
Don’t let the lower-paying symbols put you off too much however; due to the ways-to-win format Raging Rhino Ultra uses, enough of the low-value symbols can still bring about a fairly significant win - so don’t discount them too early!
When it comes to the mid-value symbols, again, they remain unchanged from the original Raging Rhino. You’ll find a number of animals, including a badger, a crocodile, a gorilla, a cheetah and the Rhino himself. Naturally, it’s the Rhino you’ll want to look out for as he’s the highest-paying symbol of the lot. Landing just two of him will award a win - just like the original - and he’s stacked on all reels, making it possible to land huge combinations with him involved.
The wild symbol also remains unchanged, depicting a blazing sun behind a tree in the desert. The wild symbol can only land on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, and it substitutes for all other symbols aside from the scatter symbols which take the form of Blue and White Diamonds. During the bonus round, the wild symbols also have 2X and 3X multipliers attached to them, making it much easier to form big wins.
Raging Rhino Ultra Bonus Features
If you’re reading - wondering what’s actually different between the original Raging Rhino and Raging Rhino Ultra then - well, that’s perfectly understable. Until now, no major differences have been made - and it’s the bonuses and features where things begin to really change. Below, we’ll look at what bonuses Raging Rhino Ultra has to offer - and what you can expect while playing them.
Expanding Reels
Expanding reels are a brand-new feature in Raging Rhino Ultra - and it appears to be a popular reel modifier in video slots right now, which is probably why WMS decided to include it in Raging Rhino Ultra. On any spin, the Expanding Reels feature may randomly be triggered, and when it does two more reels can increase up to 6 positions in height for the next spin. Once the spin is complete the reels decrease in size back to their original format for the next spin.
Stampeding Reels
Stampeding Reels is another randomly-triggered feature which can present itself on any spin during the base-game. When it comes, extra Rhino symbols are stacked on all six reels, making it easier to form (hopefully) 5 or 6-of-a-kind wins featuring the Rhino symbol. Stampeding Reels is actually a feature which the land-based version of Raging Rhino often includes, but this is the first time we’ve seen it in an online version of the video slot.
Free Spins
The main attraction with playing Raging Rhino Ultra is the Free Spins feature, triggered by landing three, four, five of six of the Diamond scatter symbols anywhere in view. Do so, and you’ll be awarded 5, 8, 15 or 20 free spins respectively.
Now, before the free-spins begin you'll be taken to a giant wheel - and you get to have a spin of this wheel. Here, you’ll find yourself able to win additional free spins (up to a maximum of 50) or one of the three non-progressive jackpots, all of which are worth 1,000, 10,000 or 100,000X the current coin value you’re playing at. You get to keep spinning this giant wheel until it lands on the “Start” notch, at which point the free spins round will begin.
Buy Pass
WMS is the latest game developer to enter the “Bonus Buy” arena, and Raging Rhino Ultra comes complete with a Buy Pass option. This allows you to purchase direct entry to the Free Spins bonus for a cost of 75X your stake. It’s quite good, we feel, and playing this way also increases the RTP of the game slightly, up to 96.70%. Plus, when you use the Bonus Pass function, the Expanding Reels feature can expand the reels up to eight positions in height - massively increasing the number of ways-to-win and unlocking even more win-potential.
Our Verdict Of Raging Rhino Ultra
On the face of it Raging Rhino Ultra may look pretty much identical to the original WMS Raging Rhino - but a closer look does reveal a number of subtle - and well thought-out additions. First off, the expanding reels is a nice touch. It seems like they’re the “in” thing at the moment, and we’re happy to see WMS diversifying the features within their games - a welcome addition in our opinion.
We also like the new addition of the jackpots. While they’re not progressive jackpots, they are sizable - and a maximum win of 12,500X ensures there’s plenty of win-potential on offer, regardless of the stake level you’re playing at.
We should also point out that SG Gaming has finally appeared to have a better handle of how to build solid HTML5 games, so some of the lag and UI issues found in the original Raging Rhino (along with the Megaways version) seem to have been ironed out. On the whole, Raging Rhino Ultra is a good-looking game, and decent win-potential and exciting bonuses and features mean it’s a great choice for those who liked the original and want to experience something a bit new.

Raging Rhino Ultra FAQs
Who made Raging Rhino Ultra?
Raging Rhino Ultra has been developed by a game studio called WMS - also known as Williams Interactive. WMS are responsible for some of the most successful video slots in history, including Ruby Slippers and the original Raging Rhino - and they also made Montezuma, an Aztec-themed slot which proved one of their most successful releases.
What’s the RTP of Raging Rhino Ultra?
Raging Rhino Ultra has a default RTP setting of 96.20%. It’s unclear whether WMS will be offering the game in different RTP settings to online casinos who want to offer a lower RTP version of the game.
What’s the maximum win in Raging Rhino Ultra
WMS has opted to implement a forced win cap in Raging Rhino Ultra - although it’s higher than the limit we see imposed by the majority of game developers. Raging Rhino Ultra allows you to win up to 12,500X your stake - which is a nice payout regardless of the bet size you’re playing at!
What are the betting options available in Raging Rhino Ultra?
Raging Rhino Ultra can be played from between 0.40 and 20 credits per spin. While this may not suit low-rollers particularly well (most slots today allow you to wager as little as 0.10 credits) it’s still a fairly low bet amount and one that should fit within the vast majority of players’ budgets.
How is Raging Rhino Ultra different from the original Raging Rhino Ultra?
There’s a number of distinctive features that help to set Raging Rhino Ultra aside from the original Raging Rhino slot, and the first is the expanding reels modifier. On any spin, two or more reels can randomly increase in size, giving you more ways to win! There’s also the addition of a Wheel Feature, during which one of three jackpots can be won; they’re not progressive jackpots, but they are worth significant amounts of cash, up to 100,000 times the coin value you’re currently playing!
