Review / First Impressions

One of the first things that strikes us when we play Holmes and the Stolen Stones is the care and attention that have clearly gone into the design of the game. Even the lower playing card symbols - clubs, hearts, spades, and diamonds - have been intricately designed so that even a symbol which can often become boring if you’re a regular slots player has something new and exciting to offer.

The theme of the game is evident in everything you do here, from the backdrop of the game to the layout, music and special features, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. When it comes to Yggdrasil, we expect a certain standard of quality, and Holmes and the Stolen Stones definitely seems to live up to this.

The other thing that’s worth mentioning is that although this is a low-variance slot and we were only expecting a few low wins, we were actually pleasantly surprised by the frequency of larger wins, with many paylines awarding us 20x our stakes. Not bad for a low-variance machine! We were also pleased to trigger both Keyhole bonus rounds in our first 100 spins, which was nice as sometimes it can take far longer to unlock bonus rounds, particularly when there’s multiple types. Although neither were particularly innovative, their simple designs and easy-to-win gameplay made them perfectly pleasant, and we left each bonus round feeling quite satisfied with our winnings.

Holmes and the Stolen Stones

Payout Ratio (or RTP) of Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slot

Holmes and the Stolen Stones offers an RTP (Return to Player) ratio of 96.8%, which is just above standard for an online slot machine. For those who aren’t familiar with RTPs, this figure indicates the amount, on average, you can expect the game to pay out. For example, an RTP of 96.8% means that for roughly every $100 wagered, the machine will pay out $96.80, although of course individual gameplay will vary thanks to the Random Number Generators utilised to ensure every spin is completely random and fair.

Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slot Graphics

As we would expect from a Yggdrasil casino slots game, the graphics in Holmes and the Stolen Stones are very well crafted and suit the theme and tone of the game. The gemstones seem to sparkle and leap from the page, and the few small animations used in the reels work well to bring life to the main characters. We particularly liked the detail used in the two different keyhole symbols.

How to Play Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slots

Spin the reels to win at Holmes and the Stolen Slots by clicking on the arrow chasing itself in the very middle of the bottom of the screen, or choose the auto-spin function to the right to have the game automatically spin from 10 up to 1,000 times for you.

Before you spin, however, you’ll need to set your bet. You can do this at the bottom of the screen near the left-hand-side by clicking on the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons next to the ‘Coin Value’ or simply click on ‘Max Bet’ to gamble the maximum permitted by the game (40 coins in this case).

The small purple cross button in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen will bring up your settings options. Click on the red ‘i’ to view the game details, including paytable, rules, etc. The orange cog will open the game settings, the light blue symbol next to it gives you the game rules, and the speakerphone allows you to easily mute or unmute the sound effects.

During gameplay, you can double-check your winnings at any time by clicking on a winning symbol. This will bring you up the paytable for that particular symbol, which we thought was a simple but useful touch not found in many online slot machines. The Jackpot figures are also all clearly listed at the top of the reels: five reels for five potential jackpots. As you collect the stolen gemstones, matching colours will be added to the corresponding jackpot, so you can easily keep track of how close you are to winning the big bucks when playing Holmes and the Stolen Stones.

Holmes and the Stolen Stones Game Volatility

Holmes and the Stolen Stones is a low-variance slot, meaning that you can expect to receive low wins fairly frequently, with bigger prizes possible but far more elusive, and you may need to suffer a few losses before you start to reap the rewards of being a top detective.

How To Win at Holmes and the Stolen Stones Slots

To win, simply match three or more of any symbols across one of the 20 available paylines, starting from the far left reel.

For the biggest wins, you’re going to want to find three or more symbols of the main detective himself. This pipe-smoking genius will reward you with 70x your bet for three-of-a-kind, 250x for four-of-a-kind, and a huge 4,000x your bet for five-of-a-kind. Your next highest-paying symbol is the faithful Dr Watson, who offers super-sleuths up to 2,000x your bet if you find five of his likeness.

As with most online slots, the lowest-paying symbols are the clubs, spades, hearts, and diamonds representing the classic gamblers’ playing cards.

These symbols aren’t the only ones you want to keep an eye out for, however. There are also two bonus games in Holmes and the Stolen Stones which are triggered by finding three or more of the two different Keyhole Scatter Symbols.

Holmes and the Stolen Stones Bonus Features

The first Bonus Feature is the Keyhole Bonus. This is illustrated by an old-looking rusted silver keyhole with the word ‘BONUS’ written underneath. Find three or more of these to head over to an abandoned warehouse and select from crates to find coins or missing shards of the stolen diamonds. Anything you find during this bonus round will transfer into your main game, and you can choose until you find a golden smoke bomb hidden in one of the crates.

The second Bonus Feature is a classic free spins round, triggered by finding three or more ornate golden keyholes with ‘FREE SPIN’ written below. Find three of these symbols to trigger 10 free spins, four for 10 free spins plus 1,000 coins, or five for 10 free spins and a huge 10,000 coins. During this free spins game, you’ll also benefit from multipliers on every winning combination plus the opportunity to collect more shards of diamonds to bring you that step closer to winning one of the five fantastic jackpots up for grabs.

Holmes and the Stolen Stones Strategy and Tips

This gives you the chance to check that the RTP, variance, bonus features and more are right for you before you spend your money on a game you might not like.
