Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Route 66 features KA’s usual high-quality graphics, and it’s interesting to see a game that uses American archetypes as freely as we are used to seeing Chinese or Egyptian ones. The backdrop is the highway itself, stretching across what looks like Monument Valley, famous from John Ford westerns. The choice of icons is fun, and the completely transparent reels keep the screen uncluttered. The soundtrack is, however, a little disappointing. The rock and roll sound is very welcome, but it fades away after each spin and would be more effective if it remained a constant accompaniment.

How to play Route 66

1. Click the Play button to spin the reels and play at the current total bet level. You can also press the space bar to start.
2. Press the Spin/Stop button again to stop the reels at any time during the spin. You can also use the space bar to stop the reels.
3. Click the New Bet button to set the bet level from 0.40 to 200.00.
4. Alternatively, you can click on the Max Bet button to reset the bet to the highest possible level.
5. Click and hold the spin button to bring up the Auto-play menu. Here you can set the number of spins from 25 to infinity. While in autoplay, the button will display the number of auto spins that remain. Press the button again to exit auto play at any time.
6. The balance meter to the bottom right of the screen displays your current balance, which will be constantly updated during the game.
7. All symbols except Scatter pay left to right on active positions. Only the highest win per line is paid out. All wins except Scatter are multiplied by the per ways bet. Any scatter wins are multiplied by the total bet.
8. The Wild substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter. During free games, each wild that is landed will add a multiplier of 2x or 3x to all wins in that spin except when only scatter wins appear. All individual multipliers multiply.
9. During the base game, if 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols land anywhere on the reels, they will trigger 8, 15 or 20 free games respectively. During free games, 2, 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols landing anywhere will add 5, 8, 15 or 20 additional free games respectively.

Route 66 review: our verdict

What can we say? This is simple, good-looking and fun. It is extremely short on extras, and even the RTP is less than impressive - just a shade below average. It's probably of more interest to newcomers rather than seasoned players, but that’s not a bad thing. It's brisk and cheerful.
