Theme, graphics & soundtrack

If you played any 80s arcade games, it is likely that you will be familiar with the very basic and bleepy sound effects in this game. They are reminiscent of Mario dodging barrels and fireballs as he works his way up ladders and platforms.

There is no additional soundtrack, so we suggest some witchy tunes to enhance your experience. If anything remotely gothic or emo isn’t to your taste, try scanning your music library for tracks with the word ‘witch’ and ‘spell’ in them. The Halloween theme is fairly subtle but you will find spiders’ webs, spiders themselves, and creeping ivy hanging off anything that stands still long enough. The background is a deep blue night, with the obligatory spooky tree branches and advancing bats. This may be intended to be creepy, but it is actually quite pleasant.

The graphics are scarily basic, apart from the beautiful redheaded witch who definitely looks like she spends more time in the salon than riding around on her broom.

Our verdict

From September onwards, Halloween themed slots obviously come into their own. Lucky Witch should pick up a few new fans during this time.

The features are solid and provide enough deviation from the standard game to make it worthwhile. It would have been nice to see the features develop the Halloween theme further with some more tricks and treats, and it feels like a missed opportunity not to create some original mini-games around the cat and crystal ball, for example, rather than relying on the tried and tested playing cards and scatter/wild tropes so prevalent in slot games.

The biggest problem with Lucky Witch is the interface, as you will need to read the information thoroughly to get to know what each button does. It is not intuitive or comparable with the flow of other slots, which are easier to get to grips with quickly.
