Introduction

Design Works Gaming’s Dragon Journey adopts a full-on Chinese design to rival games such as the Magic Dragon slot and doesn’t stint on interesting features. Other DWG free play slots have been all over the world, real and imagined, so why not the Far East? One noticeable absence from this game is a free spins feature, but at least it delivers when it comes to wild symbols.

Dragon Journey uses a five-reel grid with five rows and 40 paylines. There is the wild, which is a lotus flower, and eight regular symbols: a man, a woman, a parasol, a firecracker, and the four highest playing cards.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Design Works Gaming make no apology for cramming as much of the iconography of Chinese-themed games as possible in Dragon Journey. Chinese paper walls, lanterns, geisha-style headdresses, bamboo thickets, fireworks it’s all here. The dragon that emerges and gives the game its name is suitably impressive, while the soundtrack is surprisingly thoughtful with a succession of obscure Chinese instruments taking their turns to accompany the action.

Dragon Journey RTP and variance

Dragon Journey has an RTP of 97.07 per cent, which is comfortably above average. The variance is high.

How to play Dragon Journey

1. The + and - buttons adjust the bet value settings. The bet value is the total bet per game round.
2. Press the spin button or the space bar to start the reels spinning at the current bet value.
3. Press the autoplay button (two arrows) to show and select the autoplay options. You can select the number of autospins you would like to use. Press again to stop autoplay mode and the cross to exit.
4. In autoplay mode, the spin button shows the number of spins remaining.
5. Again in autoplay mode, you can select an optional loss limit and single win limit, and set the game to stop on a progressive jackpot.
6. You may leave the game for a maximum of 15 minutes, after which time the game will end.

Dragon Journey bonus features

Symbol replacement

At the start of each spin in the base game, one symbol of the reel is chosen and transforms into one of the other symbols.

Amaze Pays

During the base game, any symbols landing can activate the Amaze Pays feature. Upon activation of the feature, a dragon appears from the triggering symbol’s position and moves around the reels, transforming anything from 4 to 24 symbol positions into the initiating symbol.

Wins are assessed once the reels have stopped spinning and again after the symbol transformations are complete. The Amaze Pays feature ends when the dragon moves to the initiating symbol position or when the dragon moves to a symbol position that has already been transformed. The Amaze Pays feature occurs only once per game.

Progressive Amaze Pays 

If the gold ingot lands in any position on the reels during the base game, it will activate the Progressive Amaze Pays feature. A dragon appears from the initiating symbol position and moves around the reels, transforming anything from 4 to 24 symbols into a gold ingot. When all transformations are complete, the player is awarded a scatter win or progressive jackpot based on the following table numbers of gold ingots:

4-5 = 0.20
6-7 = 0.40
8-10 = 0.80
11-13 = 1.60
14-16 = Progressive 5
17-19 = Progressive 4
20-22 = Progressive 3
23-24 = Progressive 2
25 = Progressive 1

Line wins are assessed once the reels stop spinning and are not reassessed after the Progressive Amaze Pays feature. The feature ends when the dragon moves to the initiating position or when it moves to a symbol position that has already been transformed. The feature can only occur once in a game.

Free games 

The free games bonus is activated by the free games symbol landing in any position on reels three, four and five and you are awarded eight free games. A dragon appears at the start of each game and moves around the reels transforming symbols into the lotus. These lock in position for the remaining free games. Up to 25 symbols can be transformed in this way.

Dragon Journey review: our verdict

Although the graphic design is a little cluttered and the background not terribly clear, the animation on the reels is perfectly acceptable and the wandering dragon is an unusual touch. There are no free spins, but there are plenty of other features to compensate. On the whole, the designers have done a good job of injecting some new life into a well-worn subject.
