A Gem of a Game

Gemix from Sweden-based developers Play’n’Go is a little out of the ordinary, and it’s also very enjoyable. The makers have taken the basics of a free slots game and combined them with some of the ideas behind the gem-based games that have been popular lately; remember “Bejeweled”? The result is definitely a winning combination and one that you can take anywhere as the game is available on your tablet and mobile in addition to your desktop.

How does this work?

The reels in this game are actually a 7 x 7 grid. Once you’ve chosen the amount that you want to bet, you press start, and the gems will fall into place on the grid instead of spinning in a traditional sense. If you have five or more gems touching, you’ll win a prize. In order to count as touching, the gems must be next to each other on the grid either vertically or horizontally; diagonally does not win prizes! The winning gems will explode, and more gems will fall to take their place, often creating new winning patterns.

Glittering prizes

This clever combination of gem game and slots game has more to offer you than just glittering gems cascading down the screen. It also has a clever combination of bonuses, prizes and levels. First of all, you’ll notice a round crystal device pictured to the right of the screen. This device charges up as you win. Winning on 20 symbols from one spin will trigger one of four special crystal events: Nova Blast, Crystal Warp, Light Beam or Chain Lightning, any of which are likely to land you some awesome prizes.

Forty winning symbols in one spin will earn you the Super Charge crystal bonus ,where all of your wins are multiplied by three. Underneath the Crystal charge device, you’ll notice a grid pattern in green. This is your route through the different Crystal worlds.

Behind some of the symbols on the reels grid are blue squares, and these correspond to the grid pattern. As winning symbols appear on the reels, the squares turn orange. When the orange squares match the pattern to the right, you’ll earn a level bonus and go up a level in the world!

Speaking of worlds, there are different ones in this game, and as you progress, you’ll go to different worlds and meet different characters. If you have a non-winning round, there’s a chance that the character in charge of your current world will give you World Wild symbols, which give you a better chance to win.

These can be Wild symbols that substitute for any symbol, Spreading Wilds that will spread from edge to edge and substitute for any symbol, or Sticky Wilds that will stay in place as you play.
