This meant that when Zheng Yi died in a typhoon in 1807, Ching Shih was able to take control of the pirate fleet they had built together (with the help of her stepson, Chang Pao). It was known as the Red Flag Fleet, because of the colors born by its leading ship.

The Red Flag Fleet was the largest in the world, and Ching Shih ruled it with an iron fist. She created her own laws and tax system, which was then implemented not just in the fleet but in the many coastal villages that fell within her domain. She also imposed strict rules for the treatment of prisoners. Many female captives would be released, whilst others would become wives to the pirates. Even then, the pirates were expected to treat their new wives well under threat of a painful punishment.

Attempts from the Chinese, British and Portuguese navies all failed to stop Ching Shih’s advance. Eventually, an amnesty was offered and she returned to the mainland. She married Chang Pao and used some of the impressive treasure she had collected in her pirate years to open a gambling house. She would die peacefully in bed at the age of around 68, avoiding the violent end that met so many pirates and with her fortune still intact.

Since her death, Ching Shih’s great success has inspired novels, plays, video games, television and film. Even today, she continues to be an iconic figure who makes a more than worthy subject for a slot.
