Theme, Graphics & Design

An imperious scarab beetle, decked out in red and blue jewels, hangs suspended above the grid with its wings unfolded. It’s the most ostentatious element of Wishing Cup, though, because the rest of the slot is fascinatingly understated. The background shows an ancient burial chamber guarded by two ominous Anubis statues, but it’s the rear wall that’s truly intriguing.

Partly shrouded in shadow, it nonetheless shows Pharaohs, priests and Egyptian aristocracy. It’s incredibly well drawn with a classic hand-painted look that’s startlingly true to life. Some Egyptian slots go down a more frivolously caricatured route, but Wishing Cup keeps things serious and historical with its attention to detail in the chamber.

Still, it’s a shame that the symbols aren’t quite as ambitious. Anubis, Horus and the scatter look brilliant, but the rest are quite simple and the majority of the paytable consists of very basic letters and numbers. The ominous music (not to mention the ambient burial room sounds) makes up for that, however.
