Theme, Graphics and Soundtrack

At first glance Fruit and Nut is just another variant of the traditional fruit slot but on closer inspection it reveals some a nice design sensibility and some rather amusing touches. The backdrop is non-figurative, consisting of a bubbles and smoke backdrop which shades from cerise pink through mauve to blue. The grid frame has pipework with water coursing through it. 

Naturally there are no characters and no theme, but the icons are all gently animated to appear to be floating in some kind of tank. The 3D effect makes the fruits appear to wobble and even the greenery moves. The Lucky Seven is a bold, gold-edged pink and positively gleams.

Live 5 have taken some risks with the soundtrack as well. Instead of the expected old-fairground sounds they have decided to do without music while the reels at are rest and instead given us a loop of bubbling, underwater sounds to match the floating animation. The reels spin to a purely electronic jingle and chunky sound effects accompany any wins. It’s a very refreshing variation.

Boost

The Boost Game has 2 parts: the pre-game in which every spin helps you up the trail; and the spins which are awarded once you have reached the top of the ladder. Each tier has a different set of symbols removed from the reels. During the pre-game each spin can either award a +1 increment or a random amount from the Boost (2-10). This is one of the more innovative attempts at updating the fruit machine format. Although it sticks to the familiar imagery of such games it uses some witty animation techniques and an entertaining sound accompaniment that is a pleasant change from anodyne musak. For a modest game it has some good extra features too. Certainly worth anybody’s time.
