Introduction

Venture into the magnificent wilderness and walk among the big cats in Lion’s Roar from Rival Gaming, played out on a 5x3 matrix with 50 adjustable paylines. 

Below the reels is the balance, bet and win amount. To the lower right are settings, and to the middle right of the reels is the main spin button. It’s user-friendly, though perhaps not immediately obvious, to click on the bet amount to adjust the stake.

When accessing the paytable on desktop, there appeared to be no scroll bar. Even using the keyboard arrows wouldn’t move the page so we could see all of the information. To see beyond the first couple of symbols in the paytable and view any instructions, we had to use the browser’s zoom out function and make everything tiny enough to fit on the screen. We’re not sure if this is a temporary glitch or not. 

All wins are multiplied by the coins staked per line, bar the scatters. There are seven themed base game symbols, including three lion images, spears and shields, monkey statue and a lion totem-mask. There are also card symbols of 9 through A. In addition is a Scatter and a Wild, the latter of which will replace all symbols to help form a winning line. Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

This is an animal and African themed slot taking us into the heart of the sub-Saharan savannahs and plains to get up close to the so-called king of beasts, the mighty lion. 

The background is a bucolic wilderness scene of hazy skies and trees. The reels are transparent and user controls are overlaid so as to be minimally disruptive, keeping the focus on the game. Symbols don’t have the best detail, but they’re given a modern animation feel.

There’s no soundtrack or any noteworthy sound effects other than a whirring as the reels spin and some singing when a win is scored. Animation is likewise minimal, with just some lines and moving symbols on wins.

This has a rather disappointing 93.42% RTP, which is below the average 96% we prefer to see. While not confirmed, we believe it to be a lower volatility slot, which suggests lower but likely more regular payouts. 

How to Play Lion's Roar 

1. Check out the paytable and rules, found via the settings button.
2. Click on the bet display and a grey pop-up will overlay the screen, with -/+ buttons to adjust the bet options. Press and hold to go through the amounts more quickly.
3. Choose the coin value between 0.01 and 0.25.
4. Select the number of coins from 1 to 10.
5. Choose the paylines in play from 1 to 50.
6. Total bet is automatically calculated below. If you’re happy with it, press the ‘x’ at the top right to resume the game.

Lion's Roar Review Overall

The serene-looking backdrop is easy on the eyes and it’s a simple slot in terms of layout, although there’s nothing too noteworthy about the aesthetics and animations here. The lack of soundtrack doesn’t help where the lack of atmosphere is concerned. However, it’s easy to pick up and play, and we’re appreciative of the low 0.01 starting stake for budget gameplay. 

The likely lower volatility might also appeal to the more casual players. Meanwhile, a top 125.00-coin stake should satiate the more daring among us. The RTP is pretty disappointing, and the higher rollers will probably find the top payouts rather dissatisfying. However, the bonus features do help to up the ante and excitement a little thanks to the expanding wilds and 2x multiplier getting a healthy boost in the Roaring free spins to x5.
