Theme, graphics & soundtrack 

Book of Rest is a visually appealing take on a variety of themes, so it is almost impossible to pigeonhole it into a single category. There are elements from travel games, holiday games, and Egyptian-themed games. 

The reels are presided over by a fun-looking tourist wearing a Hawaiian shirt, trainers, shorts and an explorer’s hat, with a camera slung around his neck. He does not seem to be an intrepid explorer of the kind seen in Rich Wilde or the Archibald suite of games but an explorer of a far more casual kind, which is further suggested by his grinning face and hand in his pocket stance. 

The symbols are a curious mix of Egyptian cats, camels, lobsters, cocktails, suitcases, snorkels, fish and shells. The reels are set against an idyllic backdrop of a tropical beach, with swaying palm trees and shimmering blue water to one side and pyramids and a skydiver to the other. It is all very eclectic but utterly charming in its own way and is unlike anything else players will have seen before.

Unsurprisingly, it is also impossible to easily categorise the soundtrack, but perhaps the overriding theme is an Egyptian one. An unexpected touch is the deep, booming voice that announces “Respin” when the respin symbol lands.

How to play Book of Rest

1. Choose whether to enable the sound effects and music via the speaker button; alternatively, for more customisable options, go through the settings button.

There are multiple feature rounds in Book of Rest, including a free spins bonus. 

Free spins

A minimum of three book symbols is required anywhere in view to trigger the free spins feature. 10 free spins are awarded, and a random symbol is selected prior to the start of the feature. When three or more selected symbols land during the free games, they will expand to fill the relevant reels.

Book respins

If the book symbol lands, the respin feature is triggered. The book symbol sticks in place and the remaining reels respin. Any additional book symbols also lock in place and a further respin is awarded. The feature ends when no further book symbols land. The book symbol appears on all reels apart from the first reel. 

Random events

There are three random events that can be triggered randomly during the base game:

1. Mixing - symbols can be shuffled during any losing spin to create winning combinations.
2. Sticky line - winning symbols stick to the payline and a free respin is randomly awarded.
3. Miracle reflection - in a losing round, the reels can be mirrored to create winning combinations.

Book of Rest review: our verdict

Book of Rest has to be played to be believed. It pushes the boundaries in terms of hybrid theming and certainly offers something different. It will probably not appeal to slots purists who enjoy more traditional theming; however, for players who are looking to change things up a bit, it is a whole lot of fun.
