Past the Post Review - Introduction
Past the Post isn’t your typical horse-racing-themed slot. While the expected assortment of horses and jockeys do appear, everything has a comic tone. Champagne bottles pay highly, followed by horses wearing blue, red and green garlands. There are brown and grey horses, too, along with the less valuable aristocrat, jockey, trainer and bookmaker symbols.
The sight of a wild multiplier feature in the form of a trophy is encouraging, but it’s free spins that hold the real appeal. Land enough scatters and you’ll be able to choose how many spins you want. Opting for more spins means a smaller multiplier and vice versa, so it isn't easy.
Whatever you choose, you can spin safe in the knowledge that Past the Post has a huge number of win ways - 243, to be precise! That total blows most other slots out of the water, and it means that you’re never too far away from a winning combination. The layout is 5x4 and winnings pay left-right.
You’ll find Past the Post as an Eyecon free slot.
Theme, Graphics & Music
Horse racing can be a serious business, but not in Past the Post! Everything on this slot is light-hearted with a fantastic slapstick take on race day. Symbol design is excellent throughout, especially on the horses.
Each horse has a different expression, from the smug grey to the furious-looking second place finisher who blows steam out of his nose. All the equine symbols have exaggerated, buck teeth, making them even funnier, and the humans don’t get much kinder treatment, either. The deranged (and slightly gormless!) jockey is hilarious, and we loved the horror-stricken punter.
The background is simple but effective. A crowded stand looks over a verdant green track moments before the start of a race. Only the music (or lack thereof) lets the side down. Reel sound effects are a little clunky and the slot definitely would have benefited from some energetic music to complement the racing theme.

Past the Post RTP and Variance
Past the Post is high volatility, so there’s inherent risk involved. Its RTP is slightly more reassuring at 95.25%, but even that's below average. Given the volatility, we would have liked a top win higher than x50.
How to play Past the Post
Follow these tips to make the most of your day at the races.
- You’ll have the option to toggle sounds on or off as the slot loads. This can be altered later in the main menu.
- A control panel above the grid shows your bet size, as well as the menu icon. Open the menu and then press help. You’ll find the paytable here, along with a reading on the bonuses and an explanation of win ways.
- Bet controls are on the right. Tap the coin pile and then use the slider to choose a wager size.
- Autoplay is just above spin. Past the Post allows a maximum of 100 automatic spins.
- Decide on a budget within your means.
- Press the blue spin icon to begin!
Bet & Win Sizes
The minimum bet on Past the Post is 0.25, and the maximum is 50. It’s easy to adjust these totals using the slider in bet controls. The biggest single line win is for x5 champagne bottles, which pay out x40.
Five champagne bottles = x 40
Five first-place horses = x 32
Five second-place horses = x 20
Five third-place horses = x 20
Five brown horses = x 8
Five grey horses = x 8
Five ladies = x 6
Five jockeys = x 6
Five bookies = x 4
Five punters = x 4
Past the Post has 243 win ways, so landing a successful combination isn’t as challenging as it could be. Even so, the top win is a mere x 50, which is a tad disappointing.
Past the Post free spins
At first glance, it might seem slightly disappointing that Past the Post only features one bonus game, but these are free spins with a difference. They pose some tricky questions, too, so let’s take a closer look.
Triggering free spins
It’s pleasingly simple to launch the free spins round. You’ll need three of the tote bag scatter symbols, and these can land in any position.
Choosing your spins
Landing the required number of scatters is only the start, however. Past the Post gives players unprecedented choice, allowing you to choose how many spins you want, along with the size of the accompanying multiplier. The more spins you choose, the higher the multiplier and vice versa, up to a maximum of 20 spins with a x2 multiplier or a x10 multiplier with 5 spins.
Retriggering free spins
There's good news even if you come away unhappy with your choice. It’s easy to retrigger spins with three more scatters, so you can always have another try.
Verdict
There’s something uniquely thrilling about choosing your own destiny on an online slot. When free rounds trigger, the ensuing balancing act between wilds and spins is hard to navigate but always exciting.
Tension climbs still higher when the round begins, and you can only hope that your decisions pay off! Happily, the rest of Past the Post is lighthearted, so those moments of high drama are offset by some brilliant slapstick fun.
Comical symbol design and a hilarious take on horse racing make Past the Post an absolute joy to play. We only wish there was some music to accompany the action!
You can take to the track again on the similarly equine themed Ascot Sporting Legends demo.
