We were invited to scroll through the opening screens to discover the key features of the game and we were quickly introduced to the key players. First is Bjorn, a fearsome warrior dressed in leather and furs but with bare thighs and biceps that seem to be completely immune to the wintry chill. He carries a huge hammer and is accompanied by his totem beast, the bear.

Next comes Rolf, a slighter figure but equally immune to the cold weather. He brandishes a mighty sword, which is notched and battered from his many battles, so he is clearly every bit as deadly as Bjorn. He is listed as the Nord of the wolves. Last, but definitely not least, we are introduced to Astrid, who seems to be a winsome blonde - but don’t be fooled! Even as the snow falls, she ventures out in the tiniest of bikini tops - made from animal skins, of course - and a teeny tiny pair of shorts. She is equipped with a massive axe and is the Nord of the eagles.

The introductory screens go on to explain some key facts of the game, then players are invited to hit the reels. The action here takes place on painted blue wooden boards that have been suspended between two stone pillars held together with straps of leather and hide and topped with giant horns. These were traditionally used by the Norse people for drinking, although these particular horns would easily hold sufficient drink for an army! Once any wins have been calculated, the player is awarded a respin with sticky wilds, This means that the main character wild, along with any of their totem animal symbols, remains in place for a further spin, leading to further wins. Any new totem animals that land on the reels are also turned wild, in which case a further respin is awarded. The respins only stop when no new totem animal lands on the reels.

This is not the only time that the player meets the game’s heroes. At random moments, either Bjorn, Rolf or Astrid can approach the reels from the side of the screen, turning symbols wild and triggering those all-important respins.

Then, just when you think that the game has revealed all its secrets, a further bonus feature arrives in the form of the animals themselves. Randomly, either the bear, the wolf or the eagle will appear from the left-hand side of the screen, where they will roar, howl or screech a rallying call. As the reels come to a stop, up to ten symbols will appear that match the animal that called out. As wins are calculated both ways across the reels, this feature can lead to some very generous prize payouts.
