Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

There is a vague sense of Ancient Egypt in the game design, but, really, it’s not as strong or as well defined as in other titles within the genre. Essentially, there are a lot of bricks on the screen in shades of yellow and brown, and one is shaped like a pyramid.

Moving on to the game’s icons, many of the tropes of the genre are present and correct. But how is the Adventurer—who looks several thousand centuries away from his true era—worth ten times more than the iconic Cleopatra? Anyway, the icons are probably the best part of the aesthetics, if a little dull when it comes to the card symbols.

The soundtrack is actually one of the best features of the game. It’s quite funky. It’s a loop of Ancient Egyptian strumming, yes, but it does work. The reels conclude with a thud and if you time it right, they can add to the slinky jingle. Of course, if you hit a win, then you’ll be treated to another, louder jingle.

How to Play Book of Symbols

Our Verdict    

Many people see the high volatility as a negative, however, if you’ve played a lot of the Ancient Egyptian slot genre then you might appreciate the ups and downs to add a bit of interest to the proceedings.

Of course, with that high volatility, you might not see many big wins. We saw plenty of small ones, but didn’t manage to trigger the free spins rounds to view the Expanding Symbols in action, which is a shame. It’s good to see a reasonable number of features in a slot, but how much does this add to the gameplay when they’re so devilishly difficult to hit?

Whether this game has enough to keep you playing if, like us, you struggle to hit a feature, is the question. Image wise, you’re probably not going to be seduced by the quality of the graphics over another title in this overstuffed genre.
