Theme and Graphics

Legend of Cleopatra Megaways is Playson’s first video slot to feature the Megaways mechanic, and it's clear they haven’t skimped out when developing it.

You don’t need a degree in Egyptian history to know that it’s based around Cleopatra, and stunning, illuminated pyramids can be seen in the backdrop of the game, with palm trees scattered around the desert floor.

Format and Betting Options

Legend of Cleopatra Megaways is built around a fairly traditional Megaways format, and there are six reels and a varying number of rows. There’s also that classic “top row” above the middle four reels, which carts in new symbols on the beginning of each spin.

You can spin the reels of Legend of Cleopatra Megaways from between 0.20 and 100 credits per spin, as well as using the autoplay option for more convenience.

The game’s RTP is a little below average, coming in at 95.80%. Most slots today have payout percentages ranging from 96% to 96.5%.

There’s one main bonus round in Legend of Cleopatra Megaways, and also an in-game mechanic, both of which we’ll talk about below.

Collapsing Symbols

Collapsing Symbols is the fancy new name Playson has given to – what the rest of us in the iGaming industry have come to know as Tumbling, or Cascading Reels.

Basically, any symbols in the base game (and the bonus round) that form part of a winning combination disappear from the reels, and new symbols then drop in to take their places. This process continues for as long as new wins are formed.

Free Spins

If you remember earlier, we talked about how the top row of symbols doesn’t replenish when those symbols form part of a win. That’s because, behind the four symbols on this row, the word “BONUS” is hidden. If you manage to form wins with all four of these symbols – thus removing them from view completely – you’ll then trigger the main bonus round in Legend of Cleopatra Megaways.

You will then be awarded 12 free spins, and there’s a progressive multiplier in play here – like we see with many Megaways slots – but Playson has chosen to do something a little bit different. During the free spins (and this mini-feature is present during the base game, too), you’ll notice that some of the symbols can land with a small Scarab Badge attached to them.

Locked Symbols

When these land – and they form part of a win – 1X will be added to the progressive multiplier. This multiplier is then “locked” in place for the duration of the bonus, and there’s no upper-limit as to how high the multiplier can reach.

It’s also possible to re-trigger the feature by clearing the four symbols from the top-most row once again. Doing so awards you an additional 5 free spins, and there’s again, no limit as to the number of free spins you can win.

Legend of Cleopatra Megaways Review

Legend of Cleopatra Megaways is the first slot from Playson’s development labs to use Big Time Gaming’s Megaways mechanic, and while it’s not perfect, it does a pretty good job of keeping you entertained, offering you good win-potential.

One thing that is pretty interesting in Legend of Cleopatra Megaways is the way in which the main Free Spins bonus is triggered. It’s quite a strange tease – and while some players are probably going to like the nail-biting anticipation of every spin, for us, at least, it got quite tiresome regularly clearing three symbols, only for that one remaining fourth one to hamper our chances of entering the bonus. Still, it’s something new, and we can’t fault Playson for wanting to mix up the Megaways experience slightly.

A Great Middle Ground

We also feel that Playson has done a great job in balancing wins that result from the Collapsing Symbols feature. One of the major problems in conventional Megaways slots like Big Time Gaming’s Bonanza, is that you can often have 5, 6, even 10+ cascades – all with ultra-low payouts – and still win below your actual stake. That seems to happen a lot less frequently with Legend of Cleopatra Megaways, and it’s a good “middle ground”, we feel.

So, on the whole, Legend of Cleopatra Megaways is a really decent first effort. It’s not perfect, and it could offer more in the way of intuitiveness, but Playson has done a great job, and it could well help them enter the mainstream iGaming market they’ve been chasing for so long.
