History of Gambling in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Voters in New Jersey gave their approval for gambling to be legalized in the state in a referendum held in 1976, just two years after a similar vote had failed to achieve enough support. Resorts International Casino opened in 1978, which marked the beginning of Atlantic City’s transformation into a go-to gambling area because it was the only other location outside of Nevada where gambling had been legalized.
