Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Given the limitations that are inherent in both physical and digital one-armed bandit games, Amigo have done a nice job with the visuals. The background is uncluttered but striking, mimicking the classic sci-fi movie journey through space, with stars and planets slipping past. The difference is that this space scape is all oranges and reds to match the gleaming gold of the grid and the game controls. It certainly exerts a slightly mesmeric influence as you prepare to play. It’s also very polite, inviting you to ‘please press spin’.

The animation applied to the symbols is restrained but effective, the icons briefly igniting then subsiding. When the crown wild lands, there is a brief choral note, but otherwise, the soundtrack is purely minimal electronica reminiscent of the sound that plays while the ask-the-audience votes are cast on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, fittingly enough.

Naturally, it is a very limited game, so there is no scope for visual invention beyond the base game, but it is all very crisp and tasteful - and very gold, too.

How to play Blazing Crown

1. Click on the cog settings icon to call up the bet wheel, where you can set your bet from 10 to 10,000 by dragging the wheel. You can also access it by clicking on the button with the coins icon and then using the plus and minus buttons to change the bet.
2. Click on Auto to enter the Autoplay menu. This allows you a choice of automatic spins from 10 to infinity. The temporary autoplay button that appears above the credit balance tells you how many auto spins are remaining. Press the button again to exit autoplay.
3. The balance meter at the bottom left of the screen displays your current balance, which is constantly updated.
4. Click the Spin button or press the space bar to start playing using the current total bet value.
5. For scatter symbols, only the highest win is paid. Scatter wins and line wins are added.

When a game developer chooses to revisit the sort of game where it all began - the fruit machine - there seem to be three options. Recreate the original version faithfully, with all its old-fashioned elements; update the standard version with some peripheral additions; or pile in loads of bonus features that might upset purists. Amigo seem to have taken the middle road because this is, at heart, a very basic fruit slot. It doesn’t look anything like the ones you’d have found in arcades and casinos decades ago, but the game play is reassuringly similar. The payout potential is good, and if you are looking for something straightforward that’s also smartly delivered, this may suit you.
