North American themed slots are pretty popular these days - and since Novomatic started releasing them onto the market at a prolific rate, other game developers have followed suit. Cowboys Gold is the latest game to enter the genre, and it’s from Pragmatic Play - a leading software provider who’ve garnered significant momentum over the past few years.

From the moment you open up Cowboys Gold you’ll notice the American theme present; it’s clearly based around the good old Wild West, and despite having a basic (and somewhat bland) look and feel to it, Cowboys Gold sets the scene from the moment you begin playing.

When it comes to symbols; Pragmatic Play has opted to use playing card values, including 10, jack, queen, king, and ace for the game’s lower-paying symbols. These all look pretty cool and have a very Wild West-esque look and feel to them. The game’s higher-paying symbols include spurs, whiskey bottles, guns - and, the best-paying symbol, the golden horseshoe.

You’ll also notice a Sheriff's Badge present on the reels; this is the game’s wild symbols, and it substitutes for all other symbols apart from the scatters which appear on the middle three reels only.

Format and Betting

The game’s built around a pretty conventional format, and you’ll find five reels, three rows and 10 fixed paylines. You’re unable to adjust the number of paylines present.

Surprisingly, the minimum bet is 0.25 credits; this is odd, as a 10-payline game would normally be playable from as little as 0.10 credits. Still, high-rollers needn’t worry as Cowboys Gold offers a maximum bet of 100 credits - so the game should be suitable for the vast majority of players.

Cowboys Gold RTP and Volatility

According to Pragmatic Play, Cowboys Gold is a medium variance slot. What this typically means is that you can see fairly frequent wins - but they won’t, usually, be massive hits. A high variance slot on the other hand delivers fewer - but bigger - wins. The RTP of Cowboys Gold is relatively good coming in at 96.50%, although we should point out that Pragmatic Play does offer most of their slots in varying RTP settings, so you should check with the online casino you’re playing at to find out which RTP setting you’re playing at.

In this part of our Cowboys Gold slot review we’re going to be taking a look at the various bonuses and features you’ll find inside the game. While it’s not the most action-packed game we’ve ever reviewed there’s a fair amount going on.

Money Collect Feature

When you see the Cowboy symbols landing in view, some of them may have a small coin overlaid on them. This coin will then display a cash value, ranging from between 1X and 100X your total bet. If these small coins show up (land) on the same spin as the special renegade symbol - which appears on the 5th reel only - you’ll be paid out all of the coin values that appear on screen.

This is a pretty common bonus mechanic and it’s something that we’ve seen implemented in many of Pragmatic Play’s other slots. We think it’s fair to say that the Money Collect feature isn’t anything new, intuitive or special - and this is a shame, in our opinion!

Free Spins

The main attraction to playing Cowboys Gold is the free-spins bonus round. This is triggered by landing three of the bonus scatter symbols on the middle three reels during the base-game. If you manage to do so you’ll be awarded 10 free spins - and we should point out that you can re-trigger the free-spins bonus three more times. This is achieved by landing yet another three scatter symbols on the middle three reels.

Now, it’s the re-trigger feature that actually makes the free-spins bonus, as, each time you manage a re-trigger a multiplier increases. So, for example, the first time you re-trigger the free spins, the multiplier increases to 2X. The second time you achieve a re-trigger the multiplier increases to 3X, and if you manage to re-trigger the game a total of three times you’ll be left with a 5X multiplier which is then applied against all wins for the remainder of the bonus.

Where things get even more interesting, is with the Money Collect feature which is present during the bonus. If you have an active multiplier, this multiplier is also applied against any of the coin value wins - meaning it’s possible for a single coin to award a payout worth up to 500X your bet! If you can get a couple of these on a single spin you could walk away with those desirable 1,000X+ payouts!

Cowboys Gold Review

Cowboys Gold is a pretty solid slot, there’s no disputing that. It looks good - Pragmatic Play’s graphics, sounds and animations are well-made and professional, and the game certainly looks up to scratch alongside other leading slots released today. We also like how the RTP is a healthy 96.50%, as you can expect a decent amount of play-time. A medium variance slot, Cowboys Gold still offers you the chance of winning upto 6,065X your bet too, so there’s definitely win-potential to be found.

Where we feel Cowboys Gold lacks is the bonuses and features. We’ve seen the Money Collect bonus used so many times, by Pragmatic Play and other game developers - it just feels so overdone, and, unlike Mustang Gold, there aren’t any multipliers or reel modifiers either, so it’s pretty bland during the base-game. The free spins round too doesn’t leave much to be desired, with a fairly measly 5X multiplier. We’d like to have seen Pragmatic Play opt for an increasing multiplier here - or, at the least, some additional wilds.

On the whole, however, Cowboys Gold isn’t a bad effort from Pragmatic Play, and it’s a decent little game for those who’re fans of more classic, basic slots. It’s not going to be overtaking NetEnt’s Dead or Alive 2, or Nolimit City’s Deadwood as a leading Wild Wild West slot - but it’s likely to go down well with Pragmatic’s player-base, and if you’re looking for a slot that uses a proven concept, Cowboys Gold may be a game well-worth checking out!
