Taking on the Skies

The aviation age started with the flight of a hot-air balloon in 1783. The hot-air balloon was not easy to control, however, and it was recognized that the future of air travel lay with the steerable balloon, known as a dirigible or airship. Goods and people first took to the skies in an airship.
