Downton Abbey slot graphics & theme
If you are have not seen Downton Abbey, you may be in the minority. Luckily for you, we have not had the chance to see it either, so you can come on the journey of discovery with us as we take a look into the TV show and - more importantly - the slot.
Downton Abbey is a British television drama that is set in the early 20th century. It tells the tale of the Crawleys, an aristocratic family, and the servants who work in their country house estate. It is very much a period drama with snippets of real-life events, such as the sinking of the Titanic, and how these affect the family and those around them.
As the slot loads, you will see the main characters along with a short promo video scanning across the historic house and those who live inside. The house remains in the background as the game progresses, while the reels - broken up into two 3 x 5 grids - sit in the middle of the screen. Characters from the show appear on the reels, split into the family and other aristocrats on the top level and the servants and other help on the bottom reel. This is a great way to tell you more about the characters and their significance in the show.
There are other symbols that match the upstairs/downstairs layout of the reels. On the top reel, you will also find teacups, a floral hat and a beautiful dog; below deck, you will see a scrubbing brush, keys and a basket of eggs. Each symbol will only appear on one reel set, with no crossovers between reels.
The slot is accompanied by a soundtrack that fans of the show may find familiar, as it plays continuously throughout. There are also small soundbites of the characters welcoming you to Downton and wishing you luck as you spin the reels.
How to play Downton Abbey slots
All your playing options are neatly tucked away so that none of the focus is taken away from the magnificent house in the background and the characters on the reels. The only option that is obvious is the spin button, with prompts to press it shown to the side.
If you want to adjust your bet, you will need to click on the three dots that sit next to your current total bet amount. This enables you to use the plus and minus buttons to set your coin value; in turn, this will automatically increase your total bet. You can select a coin value of between 0.01 and 8.00, which means a total stake of a minimum of 1.00 and a maximum of 800.00.
Aside from the bet options, there are two further options when you click on the three dots. First is turbo, which can be clicked on and off based on whether you would like the reels to spin extra fast or at normal speed. The other option is autoplay, which can also be clicked on or off to allow the reels to spin on their own.
Before you spin, you may want to take a look at the game rules and paytable, which can be found in the information key in the top left-hand corner. This shows you the significance of each symbol and lets you know what you need to do to land one of the features. When you are happy with the rules, click the spin button to get started.
How to win at Downton Abbey slot
Like most slots, the aim is to match as many of the same symbols as possible to increase your payout. Initially, only game one on the bottom set of reels is in play, giving you 40 potential paylines. The top set of reels, game two, will only become illuminated when you land a bell inside the circle on the bottom central reel.
The prizes all depend on the symbols that play a part in the winning combination. The household items are the lowest payers, with the hat and scrubbing brush paying out 3, 7 and 15 when you land three, four or five of a kind. This prize increases steadily, with the teacups, basket of eggs, trinket box, keys, dog and pocket watch paying out for between three and five matching symbols.
The characters pay a little more, with each set of reels having a corresponding character and coloured background. The characters of Thomas Barrow and Lady Edith Crawley are both green and will pay 7, 12 and 30, whilst Mrs Patmore and Lady Sybil Crawley are both purple with a payout of 7, 15 and 40. John Bates and Matthew Crawley, both against a blue background, will award you 8, 18 and 50, whilst the turquoise of Anna Smith and Lady Mary Crawley will pay 8, 20 and 75. The penultimate characters are Mrs Hughes and Cora Crawley with their yellow boxes, paying 10, 25 and 80. The final characters of Mr Carson and Robert Crawley, or the Earl of Grantham, reward players with 10, 30 and 100 when they land three, four or five of the red character boxes.
Downton Abbey bonus features & free spins
There are several features in this slot, which means it is not just a simple spin-to-win game. First, there are 40 standard paylines on the bottom reel set; however, when the bell lands in the circular activation zone within the reels, it will trigger the top set of reels to come into play. This will then give you up to 243 different ways to win.
The Downton Abbey slot also has a wild symbol that will substitute for all other standard symbols to help you land a winning combination of symbols. This is represented by the titular house and will transfer onto the second set of reels when this feature is triggered.
There are several different scatter symbols in this slot that correspond with different features. The first scatter is the red rose symbol, which can help to trigger the Downton Village Flower Show feature. If you land five or more of these symbols, you will trigger the feature where you can try to match symbols - there are 30 to choose from. You may win a straight prize or continue on to land an additional feature, with the following being possible results:
- - Trophy - triggers a multiplier prize: the Grantham Jackpot, Crawley Jackpot or Village Jackpot.
- - Duty Calls scatter - two of these triggers the Duty Calls Free Games Feature.
- - Reels of Wealth scatter - two of these triggers the Reels of Wealth Free Games Feature.
- - Manor on the Move scatter - two of these triggers the Manor on the Move Free Games Feature.
The Duty Calls, Reels of Wealth and Manor on the Move Free Games Features can be triggered during the Downton Village Flower Show, where 10 free games are awarded. Duty Calls can also be triggered by landing 10 or more of the Duty Calls scatter on the reels, with up to 28 free games available. The Upstairs Downstairs double reels can be triggered during these features. The Manor on the Move feature has additional sticky wilds, which can help you to land a big win.

Downton Abbey tips, tricks, cheats and strategy
Unfortunately, there are no specific tips that we can give for a slot such as this. This is because the random number generator (RNG) ensures that slots are completely random and fair to those who play. The main pointers to give you relate to playing the demo version of the game first; in this way, you can be sure that you will enjoy the slot before spending money on it and you can get to grips with the features.
When playing with real money, remember to be careful with features such as turbo and autoplay. It can be very easy to get carried away and be left with a much smaller balance that you had anticipated. Where available, use the time and spend limit options to keep your gameplay in check.

Downton Abbey review & rating
When first playing this slot, we were a little worried about whether the features and details would go over our head, having never seen the TV show or more recent film. Whilst fans of the series will certainly take more from it, it is still an enjoyable slot to play, even for those who have not seen or even those who don’t like the show. There are lots of features that keep it exciting to play and whilst we did turn the composed soundtrack off, the fact that the symbols are characters really didn’t bother us. The graphics are great and it is clear that a lot of thought and effort have gone into making this slot. Fans of free spins will especially enjoy this slot, along with the many Downton Abbey fans out there.
