Pauls Valley is named after Smith Paul of North Carolina, who was on a wagon train to California when he stopped in what was then part of the Chickasaw Nation. He married a Chickasaw lady named Ela-Teecha and eventually became a Chickasaw citizen himself. Today, in addition to being a significant railway stop and hosting the Oklahoma Cartoonists Hall of Fame, Pauls Valley is home to a Chickasaw casino.
