The Holland America Line fleet consists of 11 luxurious cruise ships. Along with the Zaandam, the Volendam is the smallest, with a capacity of 1,432 over 10 decks. Based in Washington casino operator Carnival Corporation has owned Holland America since 1989, and although it is based in Seattle casino activities take place only at sea, unlike other USA casinos based on land or riverboats.

Casino Games

The Volendam’s casino is on deck 5, which is the upper promenade. Here you can enjoy a full complement of casino games, which are available to play while the ship is in international waters. The casino is open 24/7.

History

The Volendam was built in 1999, 10 years after the Holland America line was acquired by Carnival Corporation. There are six decks of passenger cabins on the Volendam, which is a Rotterdam-class cruise ship launched in the same year as one of its sister craft, the Rotterdam.

It has been designed with a floral theme and boasts an atrium with a sculpture that spans three decks. It was christened by the tennis legend Chris Evert.

Features and Amenities

The Volendam, in addition to the casino, has a spa, a gym and running track, pools and sun decks, shopping, outdoor games, television, children’s activities and five restaurants. Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship, and there is a dedicated internet café where drinks and pastries are available.

Dining

The Volendam’s main dining room on deck 4 is arranged over two tiers and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in two settings. An extensive menu includes calamari, soups, salads, steaks, poultry, pasta, fish and vegetarian choices.

The Pinnacle Grill is an elegant setting with ebony walls, gilded columns and a menu that embraces crab, duck, salmon, steaks and vegetarian creations. It also hosts special evenings held by New York’s Le Cirque restaurant chain.

The Canaletto is an Italian restaurant open every evening, while the Lido by the pool provides luxury outdoor dining. Open for lunches only, the Terrace Grill offers pizza, nachos, sandwiches, gourmet sausages, burgers and hot dogs.

Shopping

There are wine and gourmet shops on deck 4 and a boutique on deck 5 where you can buy fashion, watches, accessories and more. If you shop while at sea, there is no sales tax to pay.

Accommodation

Holland America Line - Volendam rooms are available at four levels of comfort, from the Ocean View and Lanai staterooms to the Vista Suites. For the serious cruise passenger, there is the huge Neptune Suite and the enormous Pinnacle Suite, each with their own verandah and equipped to sleep four.
