Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

Let’s establish up front that this game’s theme is a direct rip-off of the Austin Powers film trilogy - not a cheeky homage or pound shop remake. Groovy Powers is Austin. The blonde sidekick is Heather Graham’s character, and Fake-yonce is Beyonce. There is no ambiguity here. Let’s spare a thought for poor old Liz Hurley, who was apparently not memorable enough to warrant an appearance.

In the colour palette, all the colours of the hippie rainbow are present and correct. There’s a heavy emphasis on orange and purple, as you might expect. The background is purple and features... well, not a lot. There are just some swirls of smoke and stars. We can’t imagine what that is trying to imply.

The reels are backed with orange bubbles, and the orange logo is flanked by flowers and outlined with a rainbow, as is standard for anything purporting to represent the late '60s or early '70s. The rest of the screen, such as the controls and information, uses standard CT Gaming aesthetics.

The game's characters are cartoony but quite nicely rendered. The card icons are decorated with swirls and flowers and are also adorned with another object - a gun, walkie talkie, camera, microphone and what looks like a Swiss army knife - perhaps this has some meaning if you’ve seen the films.

As is the case with other CT Gaming titles, despite selecting "yes" for music on the game’s startup screen, there is nothing of the sort once you start to play the game. The only burst of music we heard was when the game had been left idle for a few minutes. During gameplay, there are standard-issue game sound effects only. If you’re an Austin Powers fan and you’ve persevered this far, just turn on the soundtrack.

How to Play Groovy Powers

1. Use the blue i button in the top left corner of the screen to view the win amounts for each combination.

Our Verdict

At first glance, this is not a classic style slot, but its focus on core gameplay only means that labelling it as such gives you a much better indication of the type of game you’re in for.

What it does have is a copycat Austin Powers theme, which may appeal if you were a fan of the films. If not, there’s honestly nothing here for you. With low to medium volatility, you should be in with a chance of some wins, but it would probably have been smarter to raise the variance for a game with no features.

If the theme floats your boat, go for it. Never has the phrase 'style over substance’ been so apt, but if flower power and flares are enough of a distraction from the fact that there are no real features, fill your boots.
