Introduction
Guardians of Inari is a slot developed by Arcadem. Two friends and gaming enthusiasts founded the company in Malta in 2020, which makes them one of the most recent entrants in the market and another to take advantage of the gaming-friendly Maltese regulatory regime. Arcadem free play slots haven’t yet appeared in any quantity, but the company is working hard to rectify that. With Guardians of Inari we have one of the classic confrontations between good and evil forces which we’ve seen work so well in other free play slots, like Roxor’s Guardians of Fire and Ice. Here the narrative involves two characters, Byakko and Kitsune, who have to defend Inari’s temple against Yako and her henchman.
Guardians of Inari has five reels, three rows and 25 pay lines. There are 10 symbols: Byakko, Kitsune, Yakko and Tanuki Henchman and then the five highest playing cards and a Wild. There are also two scatters: Good Mask and Evil Mask.
Theme, Graphics and Soundtrack
A smartly drawn temple sits in the background, and a basic grid holds semi-transparent reels. The protagonists are all human-cat hybrids, which is fine except that the hero and heroine look a bit bored. The playing card symbols are all painted on lanterns, which makes things a little too uniform, and there’s nothing very special about the animation or soundtrack. Workmanlike.

Guardians of Inari RTP and Variance
Guardians of Inari has an RTP of 96.11 per cent, which is about average for online slots. The variance is classed as medium to high.
How to Play Guardians of Inari
- Click the Total Bet button to call up the bet options. Here you can choose sums ranging from 0.01 to 4.00. Because the 25 paylines are fixed, the total bet will be 0.25 at the lowest level and 100 at the highest.
- Click the Autoplay button to the left to select a number of automatic spins.
- In the Autoplay menu you can also set a loss limit from 500 to 10,000, a win limit from 100 to 10,000 and a stop signal if the balance of your credit increases by anything from 100 to 10,000. Finally, you can set autoplay to stop when a bonus feature is triggered. Click the green autoplay bar to start the mode. The number of spins remaining is displayed on the autoplay button.
- Click the Play button to start spinning the reels at the current total bet value. Alternatively, you can go to settings and set the space bar to operate the reels. Press the Stop button, which replaces the Play button, to stop the reels during their spin.
- Turboplay is available in the settings menu.
- The balance is displayed at the top right.
- Only the longest matching combination per symbol is paid. Simultaneous or coinciding wins on different paylines are added together.

Guardians of Inari Bonus Features
Free Spins 1
Good Mask scatters will land randomly on the reels during play. A player needs to collect 10 of these gradually in order to unlock the bonus.. In this bonus game the two demons, fox and tanuki, will meet each other in battle. Each time the demons fight one wild will be added to the reels at random. Fights can occur at any stage of the game, and each time the fox and tanuki meet the number of wilds increases by one. Two fights mean two wilds, and three fights mean three wilds, etc. This feature can be retriggered, but the maximum number of retriggers is five in each round.
Free Spins 2
If when prompted you choose to collect Evil Mask scatters in the same way as the Good Masks, then the bonus unlocks with even greater potential. The aim is to collect four evil scatters. In this bonus the fox and tanuki demons once again fight each other. When they fight, two wilds are added at random, and for every fight the number of wilds which appear will increase by two. The feature can only be triggered a maximum of five times.
Guardians of Inari Review: Our Verdict
Guardians of Inari is fairly straightforward and perfectly acceptable for what it is in the base game. The RTP is reasonable, although the maximum pay-out is a bit miserly. What does make it interesting is the cat and fox fights and the opportunities to build your collection of Good and Evil Mask scatters. It’s nothing exceptional, but this feature is refreshing.

FAQs
What are the RTP and variance?
The RTP is 95.2%, which is a little bit low for an online slot game, where the average is around 96 per cent. The variance is medium.
What does RTP mean?
The term RTP means Return to Player. It is calculated as an overall percentage for what a player might win. As it is always below 100%, it indicates that on average a player will come away with slightly less than has been wagered, although it’s possible to win more in individual cases.
What does variance mean?
Variance or volatility is a term originally applied in poker which is routinely applied to slots to indicate the frequency and the size of pay-outs. High-variance games offer large pay-outs but deliver them only rarely, while low-variance games pay less and more often.
