Around 605 BC, Babylon would become capital of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. During the rule of Nebuchadnezzar II, the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon were constructed. Nebuchadnezzar also plays an important role in the Bible, where he ordered the destruction of Solomon’s Temple and was responsible for many Jewish people being captured and taken to Babylon.

Cyrus the Great, was the next leader to capture Babylon, bringing the city under Persian control for hundreds of years. Conflict between the Persians and Alexander the Great’s army would later cause the decline of the city. By the time of the Muslim conquest of the area in the 7th Century, much of the site was in ruins. It would not be rediscovered until the 17th Century. Since then, it has been the subject of archaeological excavation and research.

The meaning of the name “Babylon” is uncertain, but one common theory is that it means “Gate of God”. If that is the case, Gates of Babylon truly builds on the history of its namesake.
