Mega Boy is the latest online slots release from iSoftBet. It has come following Luxury Rome, which did not receive much attention from casino operators or players – but Mega Boy has received quite a lot of media spotlight. So, at Slots Temple, we’re going to take an in-depth look at this title to let you know if it really lives up to all of the hype.

Theme and Graphics

Mega Boy features a retro video game theme, right down to the soundtrack. The graphics are animated with 8-bit characters and symbol while the music is catchy little tune that could be from any classic video game. The only similar game we can think of is Arcader from Thunderkick – however, it is still very different.

While Arcader had a video game theme, Mega Boy is basically its own video game. If we didn’t know better, we would have thought that this slot was based on an actual retro game for the Super Nintendo.

Retro Gaming

This is quite a timely release, as retro gaming makes a comeback. Older consoles like Nintendos, Gameboys and Ataris are being snatched up at second-hand shops while many new games feature retro style. As such, both older and younger players are getting involved in the retro gaming trend, making Mega Boy the kind of online slots game that will appeal across the board.

Bonus Wheel Feature

One of the two characters will activate their own bonus wheels. The purple character’s wheel is on the right-hand corner of the game while the orange character’s wheel is on the left-hand. We’re a little bit disappointed that the characters don’t have actual names – but that’s not a huge gripe from us.

Each bonus wheel offers up different perks. At the end of each free spin, the bonus wheel will determine which perks are awarded.

For the orange character, they are:

  • 2x multiplier
  • Wilds that multiply horizontally and vertically
  • All symbols of a certain kind turn wild

For the purple character, the bonus features are:

  • 3x multiplier
  • Wilds multiply diagonally and horizontally
  • Random symbols turn wild

Unfortunately, this is the only bonus feature available. We see potential for an arcade-style bonus game in which players complete stages for prizes, which would really immerse the player in the video game theme. However, this bonus round is still satisfying, and it will certainly appeal to slots fans.

Our Verdict

We absolutely love the look and feel of Mega Boy from iSoftBet. The company could not have made this game look any more authentically retro. Our only complaint is that there were some missed opportunities in the bonus round – but, we can overlook that!
