Over the past few years we’ve seen an abundance of new features injected into online video slots - and one of the reel modifiers that’s remained highly popular is Colossal symbol games. On this page we’re going to show you which video slots have colossal symbols, and tell you a bit more about how this reel modifier actually works. Click here to read more.
What Are Colossal Symbols?
While playing video slots, you’ll notice that there are symbols present on the reels. Let’s imagine the slot has five reels and three rows; the most conventional layout for an online video slot. In this case, there would be a total of 15 symbols landing on the reels per spin - each occupying its own space.
However, colossal symbols shake this conventional mechanic up a bit - and, as the name suggests, colossal symbols take up more than the standard “one space” that most normal symbols do. When colossal symbols land they can take the form of a 2X2, 3X3, or even 4X4 symbol. This makes it substantially easier to win, and, if you’re playing a slot that pays for 3-of-a-kind combos or higher, getting a 3X3 colossal symbol on the first three reels would guarantee a payout.
Some games have set colossal symbols while others change depending on the spin. For example, some slots will simply randomly land colossal symbols in view on any one spin while others will have a mechanic where one symbol is chosen at random (at the beginning of each spin) and it’s then only that symbol which can land as a colossal symbol.
Do Colossal Symbols Appear In The Base Game?
This depends entirely on the slot. Many video slots only have colossal symbols present in the main bonus round or free-spins feature - it’s a way of increasing your chances of winning during the bonus and means that there’s a little something extra to look out for while spinning during the bonus round.
However, some slots also have colossal symbols “as standard” during the base-game. However, it’s almost always the case that colossal symbol bonuses are the better-paying features. Some slots - Blueprint Gaming are a good example of a software provider who do this - have small mini-features during the base-game where, for one spin, one giant colossal symbol is placed onto the reels. This greatly increases your chances of winning, and once the mini-feature is complete the reel set goes back to normal with all symbols back to “normal” size.
Best Colossal Symbol Slots?
A large number of video slots now contain colossal symbols; one of the oldest (and most well-known) of these is NetEnt’s Spinata Grande, which has colossal symbols in both the base-game and the bonus round. However, during the free-spins the wild symbol can also land as a colossal symbol, vastly improving your chances of forming a big win.
Other notable games to feature colossal symbols includes Twisted Sister, Ecuador Gold and Hades Gigablox; you can view a full breakdown of colossal symbol slots right here on this page, and you’ll find you can play many of them for free, too!
