Reel modifiers are among the most popular bonuses and features found in video slots today, and on this page we’re going to be taking a comprehensive look at what they are, how they work and which games feature them. Click here to read more.
What Are Reel Modifiers?
A reel modifier is typically a small bonus round that’s - usually - triggered randomly during the base-game of a video slot. Unlike a main bonus round (think along the lines of a free-spins bonus or a "pick me bonus") reel modifiers are generally only present for one spin, and they’re sort of an “enhanced” spin.
We’ve seen a number of game developers take advantage of reel modifiers, but the most well-known software provider using them is Blueprint Gaming; virtually all of Blueprint Gaming’s slots contain one form of reel modifier - and in the following sub-section of this post we’ll share some of the most common types of reel modifiers you’ll see in video slots today.
Different Types of Reel Modifiers
While reel modifier features are usually triggered randomly, sometimes a slot will require you to land a certain symbol in order for them to appear. However, this is rarely the case - and most slots will see a reel modifier feature appear as soon as you’ve clicked the spin button, before the game’s symbols land in place.
One of the most popular types of reel modifier is the “scatter symbol add” function which adds extra scatter symbols onto the reels. This makes it much easier for you to land the main bonus round and increases the chance of the main bonus landing.
Another popular reel modifier is a random multiplier. This is often used by game developers like Red Tiger. When this reel modifier triggers, a random multiplier will appear, applying either for one spin only or on your next win.
Another good example of a reel modifier is “mystery symbols” - a mechanic that was first introduced by Blueprint Gaming but one that’s now used across the board by many different software providers. Mystery symbols generally get added onto the reels, and any that then land in view will also transform into the same instance of a symbol - increasing the chances of forming 4-of-a-kind or 5-of-a-kind combos.
Game developers are always coming up with new reel modifiers, so you can expect to see new ones present in new games - they’ve always got tricks up their sleeves!
Best Reel Modifier Slots?
If you’re looking to play slots with reel modifiers, you can pretty much choose any Blueprint Gaming slot - and there’s a really good chance it’ll have some form of reel modifier built in! Perhaps one of the best examples of these is Top Cat - a slot that’s themed around the iconic TV show of the same name, and a game that features no less than five reel modifiers!
Another hugely popular Blueprint Gaming slot to feature reel modifiers is The Goonies - and this also has multi-level bonuses built in too, so there’s plenty to get excited about when playing!
