Theme and story

This may seem like a cross between a beach themed slot, a nautical game and an Oriental-themed slot, but it is actually based on the Chinese sea goddess known as Mazu. Once you understand this, the nautical theme and symbols make sense. These include what we believe is a scatter dedicated to the Fujianese shamaness Lin Mo, with Mazu said to be her deified form. How to play Mazu

1. Start by answering the question about whether you would like to play with the sound on. If you say ‘yes’ and then get fed up with the tinkling noises, you can turn them off later. Scatters

Mazu review: our verdict

At first glance, this seems like a game with a very mixed theme. It feels like it should be a traditional Asian-inspired slot and yet the symbols just don’t make sense; however, once you find out who Mazu is, the whole thing comes together and you can start to really appreciate the theme. Perhaps the maker should have thought about adding a little animation at the start of the game to introduce Mazu to a western audience.

The major pull of this game is the free spins and bonus features. The free games feature can make a massive difference to your prize pot, especially if you manage to pick the highest number of free spins and the highest multiplier. Overall, this is quite a nice-looking game with plenty of features to keep you entertained. The betting choices aren’t as extensive as with some other slots, but there are enough options to suit different types of player.
