Introduction

Sweet n’ Sour is a five-reel offering that has a drinks and beach theme, transporting us to an idyllic island where we can lazily sip smoothies as we spin the reels. There are nine adjustable paylines in this 2016 slot from Oryx Gaming with modern aesthetics and simple gameplay. Drinks on the beach, anyone?

The paylines are numbered on either side. At the bottom of the screen you’ll find the user console, which looks smart and quite sophisticated. Paylines, coin size and coins are to the left, and your bet and line bet are displayed centrally. To the right are autospin, max bet and the main spin button. Game information and sound can be found at the top left and right respectively.

The symbols include individual symbols of pineapple, strawberry, cherry and banana. In addition there are three sets of lower-value symbols that come in pairs of equal value, such as lemon and lime. The wild is the image of two colourful smoothies. This substitutes for all symbols bar the scatter. What’s more, all wins that feature the wild will pay double! The scatter is a blue blender.

Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

This slot has a theme based on beach, travel and drinks, essentially being set on a beautiful beach with cocktails at hand. Such vacation-style visuals are appealing as they’re relaxing and indulgent, taking us away from life as we play.

The backdrop is an unfocused beach scene with azure blue waters, a blue sky and pristine sand, framed with two colourful cocktails to either side. It almost looks like a photo from a travel magazine or a snap from a holiday photo album, alluding to a gorgeous tropical island. The reels are overlaid as though totally transparent, with symbols simply floating, giving it a more streamlined modern finish. Base game symbols are bright, bold and rendered with excellent detail - so much so that we suspect the fruits might be real photographs. Another nice touch is the game information, which opens up like a chalkboard menu at a pop-up juice stand on the beach.

There’s no continual sound-track, but we are treated to a tropical delight with jazzy sound-effects when the reels are spinning. It adds a little zest to the flavourful aesthetics to really get us in the mood for our island getaway. All in all, it’s a contemporary fun slot that’s appealing for its colourful and care-free nature.

Sweet n' Sour RTP & Volatility

The RTP for this slot isn’t known, and we’d be hard pushed to estimate it ourselves. It’s thought to be quite a highly volatile game, which we’ve found through demo gameplay. Players are likely to find wins are less regular than with a lower-volatility slot; while there could be some very generous payouts waiting in the wings, they’re not going to be easy to trigger, and you’ll need to get free spins and wild combinations to get the higher prizes.

How to Play Sweet n' Sour

1. Select your paylines by clicking the number in the user interface. A list pops up, and you can choose the active lines between 1 and 9. Alternatively, click the numbers running down the side of the reels to activate paylines.
2. Click coin size for a similar pop-up list, between 0.01 to 10.00.
3. In the demo only one coin is playable, so this doesn’t need adjusting.
4. Hit spin!

Bet Sizes & Paytable Wins

The minimum wager is 0.01, with one payline at a 0.01 coin size. The maximum bet is 90.00 with nine paylines at a 10.00 coin size.

The wild, scatter and all individual fruits pay out for combinations of 2+. The lower-value duo fruits pay for 3+. The wild is the most valuable, worth a whopping 10,000x for five-of-a-kind. Next is the pineapple, at 750x for five, down to 15x for two. Both the scatter and strawberry are worth 500x for five. Even the lower-value fruits afford reasonable payouts, such as 100x for five-of-a-kind orange and kiwi, down to 5x for three.

Sweet n' Sour Bonus Features

The free spins bonus - three, four or five scatters will trigger 5, 15 or 30 free spins respectively. Players can retrigger more free spins during the round, with no maximum limit to the number of freebies on offer.

Overall Review

The graphics are colourful, bold and top-quality, helping cultivate that lazy beachside fantasy. The ability to adjust both paylines and coin size allows for ample choice in terms of wagers, with a very low 0.01 starting bet for casual gameplay and a respectable 90.00 coin max to appeal to the high-rollers.

The base game is rather dry, without too much flair or suspense. It could be argued that there are too many base game symbols, making it harder to form matching combinations. The bonus features are likewise lacklustre, involving only a free spins round, though we like the ability to retrigger them. There are some generous payouts to be had for sure, but they’re going to require more patience and wagers to trigger them. All in all, it’s a simple classic slot that probably won’t wow you, but it’ll transport you to a warm sandy beach and get you away from mundane life for a short while.
