When we heard that an online slots developer was releasing yet another fruit-themed slots game, we definitely yawned at the idea of Yggdrasil Gaming’s new Fruitoid slots.
However, once we actually saw the game, we were quite impressed, so our blogging team has provided an in-depth review so you can get a sneak peek of the title.
When you boot up the game, you’ll see that this isn’t your father’s fruit machine. Instead of featuring traditional cherries, bananas and apples, the game’s symbols consist of odd, sci-fi produce.
With strange pods and sprouts in neon colours, they seem to be the kind of fruit that would grow on a faraway planet. It is certainly a cool concept, and it is a very eye-catching design.
Yggdrasil CEO Fredrik Elmvist boasts about the design: "It’s been a great project to work on with every facet of the game designed and built in-house, even the logo font which was inspired by Apple Computer’s 1977 logo giving it both a retro and a futuristic feel. This also pays homage to a great man who inspired millions of people on Earth in one way or another".
Another interesting aspect of this title is the soundtrack. It doesn’t feature the typical bells and whistles of fruit machines. The theme is actually based on a traditional polka theme – but you wouldn’t know it unless you had been told.
The music is ambient and futuristic, and you can tell that a great deal of creativity was invested in Fruitoids’ unique soundtrack.
Sticky symbols play a major role in Fruitoids’ gameplay. Whenever three or more symbols appear on the reels but do not make up a winning combination, they stick in play and the player receives a respin. If more similar symbols appear on the next spin, they will also stick in place.
This continues until the player hits a winning combination. If you’re lucky enough, then you can turn all of the symbols on the reels into like symbols and hit a huge win.
Players can also earn multipliers from 2x to 5x. As players fill the reels with like symbols, they earn increasing multipliers. This bonus does not occur as frequently as the sticky symbols.
We did miss the off-screen bonus feature. There is potential for some really cool and unique bonus games, but there weren’t any. It seems like a missed opportunity, but we could let it slide. We would give this game at least a few spins.
