To keep things fun and interesting, online slots developers equip their games with a wide range of themes. While we appreciate the thought and work that goes into developing these themes, there are some that should be put to bed. Here are a few of our picks for online slots themes that should simply be retired.

Mexican Fiestas

Games like More Chilli and Paco & the Popping Peppers always offer up a great time, but we’ve seen this theme far too often. Every year, several developers will launch at least half a dozen slots that are based on Mexican Fiestas. While the games are always fun and festive, we can’t help to notice a lack of originality.

There are plenty of other festive cultures that would make for great online slots themes. Venetian Carnivals, Caribbean fetes and French galas are just a few potential cultural events that would make for fun themes for online slots.

Chinese Luck

There are dozens of online slots that are based on Chinese luck and fortune. Games like Lucky 88, Choy Sun Doa and 5 Dragons are games that do a great job of conveying the emphasis on luck that is prominent in Chinese culture.

However, the theme is just a bit overdone. In the same vein, we also see far too many games based on the Luck of the Irish (such as Lucky Leprechaun and Irish Eyes).

Ancient Egypt

Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, Riches of Ra – these are all great online slots games that do a fantastic job of conveying the intrigue and mystery of Ancient Egypt.

Unfortunately, we see this theme way too often. It seems to be a go-to for most online slots developers, and we’d love to see titles based on other ancient cultures just to mix things up a bit more.

Life of Luxury

The logic seems sound – online slots developers want to create games that give players a look into the life that they should have if they were to cash in on a generous jackpot. However, there are only so many yachts, mansions and diamond rings that we can take.

Any slots game that features a ‘life of luxury’ theme always features the same symbols. They are usually indistinguishable from one another.

Anything Risqué

We understand that online slots are geared towards adults, so designers can get away with risqué themes about sex. However, these types of games are rarely executed tastefully. One of the worst offenders is a Microgaming title called 50 Shades of Santa, which puts an overtly sexy twist on Christmas.

Planet Exotica is another one, as it features a bonus round in which a busty alien strips for you. It’s best if online slots developers steer clear of this type of theme; it simply induces too much cringing.
