This week, it was announced that Full Tilt Poker will be merged with PokerStars. Soon, both online poker rooms will be made available on the same platform. While this is a wise move for the owner of both companies, Amaya Gaming, how will it change online poker for the players?

Aren’t Full Tilt and Poker Stars already owned by the same company now?

Both companies are owned by Amaya Gaming, which recently purchased the two rival poker rooms. However, they are still operated on their own native platforms.

So, in this case, the term ‘merger’ refers to the software rather than any sort of business developments. This means that both Full Tilt and PokerStars will be offered on the same poker client.

Is this good news for players?

It is great news if you prefer PokerStars’ software, as Full Tilt will be migrated to the PokerStars client. Players will still have access to their Full Tilt Poker accounts but they will only be able to play using PokerStars technology. Unless you are particularly picky, you will not notice very many differences between the two different platforms for PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. Although Full Tilt will no longer be its own poker room, players will still have access to some of their favourite Full Tilt features.

A press release from Amaya reads: "Full Tilt players will continue to enjoy the brand experience they love, with the continuation of Full Tilt avatars and innovative rewards, such as The Deal,"

Another positive aspect of the migration is that there will be a bigger player pool overall.

So, prize pools in tournaments will be much more generous, and players will be able to compete against a more diverse collection of players to keep their interest in poker fresh. There is also no need for players to create new accounts. If you already have a PokerStars or Full Tilt account, you will be able to logon to the newly merged platform easily.

What are the downsides?

If you were a fan of the new addition of casino games to both PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, you will be a little bit disappointed. Slots and table games will not be immediately available on the new platform.

Amaya Gaming has not yet mentioned when they will be added to the new poker client, so players could be waiting for quite some time.

The news was only announced a few days ago, so little is still known about the merger. As we learn more, we will keep you updated with the details.
