Online slots developers put a great deal of thought into the design of their games. However, it sometimes feels like they are short on ideas, the result of which is can be the unfortunate decision to make some very poor choices for online slots themes.
At SlotsTemple, we’re going to cover our least favourite online slots themes.
40 Shades of Santa
Fifty Shades of Grey is the latest literary phenomenon to sweep bookstores around the world. The risqué novel series revolves around the sexual relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. With controversial content, the books have soared to the top of the best-sellers charts, and a movie series is now in the works.
40 Shades of Santa is a recent online slots game that takes the racy themes of the Fifty Shades of Grey series and pairs them with Christmas. The main character of the slots game is Santa and the game’s symbols include handcuffs, women’s legs and other salacious icons.
While online slots are never targeted at kids, it still doesn’t seem very tasteful to take a family-friendly icon like Santa and put him in a sexually-charged setting.
Lakshmi’s Gold
In some cultures, religion and luck or fortune go hand-in-hand. However, we’re not entirely sure that means that it would be okay for slots developers to base games on religious figures. PlayTech’s online slots title, Lakshmi’s Gold, was based on the Hindu god of good fortune and wealth – but it did not last very long in the online casino world.
Shortly after its release, the Hindu community launched a complaint. The game was pulled from online casinos and PlayTech was required to make a formal apology.
More Chilli
This is another game that could be seen as somewhat offensive to some players. The Mexican-themed slots game features a gun-toting, sombrero-wearing, poncho-clad character. Few other games are based exclusively on a particular country or group of people, and it is likely because they run the risk of portraying stereotypes.
Fortunately, no one has made an official complaint about the game. While we’re sure it’s all in innocent, light-hearted fun, we still wouldn’t want anyone to be offended at the way in which their culture is being portrayed online.
Immortal Romance
This is another online slots game with literary roots. While Microgaming does not explicitly credit Twilight as the inspiration for this online slots game, it is quite obvious that this is the case.
The game features three main characters that are in a love triangle, and two of them are paranormal creatures. (Does that not sound like Edward, Bella and Jacob?).
With movies, books and television shows based on the theme of teenage vampire romance, the last thing we’d want is to be exposed to it in the online gambling world world.
Now, we’d like to hear from you: what are your picks for the worst online slots themes?
