JTG may not be one of the biggest game developers on the planet - and certainly in the West, they’re yet to find their footing when it comes to online gambling. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should rule them - and their games - out. Dreams of Gold remains one of their most popular (and successful) releases, and the developers themselves state “big wins occur at a high rate.”
The game is based around a 3X3 grid layout and offers a total of 5 fixed paylines. It’s fair to say JTG knows exactly what they’re doing when it comes to slot design - Dreams of Gold is a perfect example of what the developer is capable of. The reels are set on a transparent backdrop, allowing you to see deep into the game’s abyss.
You’ll see a beautiful water feature in the foreground, with vast mountainous terrain in the distance. Two floating fros (yes, really) hover at the top of the screen, with the “king” frog positioned between them, fanning himself with a traditional Chinese fan!
You’ll find the usual array of in-game options available in Dreams of Gold, including an autoplay feature, a quick spin button and the “$” button which allows you to cycle through the various bet sizes available.
Dreams of Gold’s Symbols And Payouts
There’s quite a few symbols in Dreams of Gold. The highest-paying is the Koi Fish, which awards a total of 20X your stake for matching a 3-of-a-kind combo. The other premium symbols include a Lotus Flower, a Chinese Lantern and a Bobble Toy - awarding 10X, 5X and 3X for matching a 3-of-a-kind combo respectively.
The game’s lower-paying symbols award pretty low payouts - there are four tiles in total, awarding between 0.1 and 0.5X your stake.
All of the symbols that trigger one of the bonuses award cash prizes too - though this ranges between 0.2X and 1X your bet, so they’re nothing particularly special.
Dreams of Gold’s Bonus Features
Dreams of Gold’s feature mechanism looks quite complicated - and it can take a bit of heavy reading to figure out what’s what, and how each feature is triggered. Below, we’ll take a look at the bonuses on offer.
Triggered by lining up a 3-of-a-kind combo of the gold “8” symbols during the base-game, the free-spins bonus awards you 8 free-spins with the “Big Win Rush” feature active. During the spins, if the frogs at the top of the screen start to glow, the next win will be a 3-of-a-kind line of 8 symbols.
The re-spin feature takes place during the base-game and is triggered when 3 adjacent RESPIN symbols land on a payline. The reels will then re-spin, with the next re-spin offering a higher chance of triggering the “RUSH” feature. If you manage a total of 3 re-spins, the RUSH feature will trigger automatically - virtually guaranteeing you a healthy payout.
Occasionally, during the RUSH feature you'll notice that the reels turn a distinct shade of gold. When this happens it means you’ve triggered “Heaven Mode” - a kind of enhanced feature. When Heaven mode is activated the chances of receiving a big win increases - and you also have a much better chance of the feature appearing on the next spin too.
The “Goddess Challenge” bonus can trigger during both the base-game and the free-spins bonus. When it does, you’ll enter a mini game. Three frogs will appear on your screen, and you’re simply tasked with picking one of these frogs. You will then receive a payout (a coin win) and also trigger the RUSH feature.
From our experience, the Goddess Challenge is quite hard to land - but when it does, it doesn’t disappoint. It’s capable of dishing out some really healthy-sized wins, and we also like how it gives you a RUSH - it’s almost like a second chance if your initial frog pick didn’t amount to much.
Our Verdict Of Dreams of Gold
We particularly like how there’s so many bonuses built into a 3X3 slot - this, we feel, is quite rare, and offers something vastly different from most grid-layout slots we come across. The high volatility nature of the game means it can be pretty cruel on your balance - but on the other side of the coin, the big wins are more than capable of catapulting your balance upwards and we’d say it’s a fantastic effort from the Japanese game developer.
