Written by Gianni Rodari in the 1950s, “Cipollino” can be translated as “Little Onion”. The Vegetable Mafia

This particular adaptation of Cipollino takes inspiration from The Godfather, perhaps the most iconic of Mafia movies. Think of when Michael flees to Sicily and in that rural idyll, falls in love while a sweeping, romantic soundtrack plays, only to see it all ripped apart in the bloodies fashion. The reels of The Cipollino are set in that kind of world, an Italy of yesteryear. If it wasn’t for the period car, the background could be from centuries ago, not just decades. 

Instead of men in suits, the symbols on the reels are potatoes, tomatoes and more, each with appropriate clothing and plenty of character. Winning symbols come alive thanks to lights and animations. It’s something of a surreal depiction, especially when you see the weapons the vegetables carry, from crowbars to guns. The bullet holes in the hanging washing are a nice extra detail, as is the horse’s disembodied head, another Godfather reference.
