Theme, Graphics & Design

Master of Gold’s titular character puts in his first appearance on the loading screen - and he makes a big impression! A wizened old man with an impressive moustache and beard combination, he sits amongst a pile of gold. He fades away as the grid materialises, but that gold and the airy aesthetic remain firmly in place throughout.

Belatra does a great job of fusing the wealth theme with a more pastoral, extremely relaxing countryside vibe. Trees crowd behind the reels, and there are rolling fields visible in the middle distance. The scene is brought to life by glowing fireflies and the sensation of wind rustling the branches.

Gold is still the predominant theme, though, and there’s lots of it. It’s strewn underneath the grid and also heaped in barrels at the side. Music is a particular highlight, but there’s just not enough of it. The tune that plays as the reels spin is bombastic and comical, but it’s over in a few seconds. If this had been extended into a full-length soundtrack, Master of Gold would be in a league of its own.
