You don’t get to just sit back and watch the reels spin with Monster Quest. No, this Ganapati slot is a series of battles between you and a series of vicious mons...ters. As you move through different settings and beasts you also have the chance to trigger the Treasure Chest feature. The average return to player is 96.4%, but there’s nothing else average about this game.

Introduction
No reels. No paylines. No symbols. You may be forgiven for thinking you’ve wandered into a computer game that isn’t a slot. Ganapati describes this offering as a “battle slot” because that’s what you do. Every time you click “Start” you attack a monster rather than spinning a reel. If you’re lucky enough to damage or even defeat the monster, you win. Every time you beat your foe, a new opponent will appear. There are also a few different types of battle that may show up as you play.
Theme & Story
This slot is very dependent on its story. You are questing across three different lands - a prehistoric forest, desolate battlefield or dark cave - where you will meet a succession of monsters from Chinese mythology, each drawn in extraordinarily vivid detail. Excellent graphics and animations are characteristic of free Ganapati slots. Allowing for colour variations, there are up to 20 monsters in total.
Jiangshi is also known as the hopping vampire or hopping zombie. It is an undead creature in formal clothes that hides in dark places by day and feeds off “qi” or life force at night. As a corpse, its body is so stiff it can only move by hopping whilst holding its arms out for balance.
Xingtian was beheaded in battle with the Supreme Divinity, but he continues to battle and dance with his axe and shield. He uses his nipples as eyes and belly button as a mouth.
Taotie are fiends known as one of the “four evil creatures of the world” in Chinese mythology. Their image is often found on “dings”, which are a type of bronze cauldron, on which they are depicted as a face mask with large eyes and no lower jaw. The Taotie is famous for the ravenous hunger that leads it to devour everyone in its path.
Qiongqi is another of the four evils with a tendency to eat people. Different versions have been described in mythology, including a winged tiger, an oxen-like creature or a dog-headed human.
Taowu is yet another of the four evils, this time renowned for its stubbornness, ignorance and cruelty. It blunders through the world on a trail of destruction, refusing to stop for anyone or anything.
Hundun is the fourth evil and is associated with chaos and confusion. It has six legs and wings, but no face.

Monster Quest RTP & Volatility
Perhaps the one area where this game looks like other slots is it does have an RTP. The average long term payout is calculated at 96.4%. There’s no official word on volatility.
How to Play Monster Quest
If you’ve played a few slots, you probably think you have the basic format down. Monster Quest is a bit different, so pay extra attention to the rules.
1. You can still set your bet as normal. Either click the bag of gold just above the Start button (on the bottom right of the screen), or the scroll at the bottom left for more general settings and info. The second page is your bet.
2. There’s also an autoplay, available next to the Start button or in the settings. Choose your number of automatic spins or set limits.
3. The settings menu is also where you’ll find the paytable and game instructions, which you’re going to want to read even more closely than normal.
4. Now it gets interesting. Hitting Start means you are choosing to attack a monster. A few things can happen next:
- The monster escapes.
- You miss.
- You damage the monster.
- You damage the monster so badly it is defeated.
- You begin the Intrusion Battle feature.
- You begin the Rare Monster Battle feature.
- You begin the Boss Battle.
5. You keep fighting the same monster on every turn until it is defeated, at which point a new monster will be selected at random.
Bet & Win Sizes
Your bet can be 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.50 or 5.00.
Win sizes are a bit more random. Open the paytable and you’ll be told:
“Rewards are randomly selected, depending on the type of monster and the result of the battle.”
and
“Payouts vary in the base game and during the features.”
Which doesn’t really tell you much, but suggests there’s a lot of variation in possible wins.
Monster Quest Bonus Feature
Bonus features are another area where Monster Quest doesn’t give a huge amount of explanation, but one extra that is clearly described is the Treasure Chest Feature. Three treasure chests will appear on screen but you can only pick one to award you a prize. That prize will vary depending on your current monster.
Our Verdict
Some people will probably think Monster Quest doesn’t feel like a slot, and think that makes it less enjoyable. Others will be delighted by the innovative gameplay and the chance to do something a bit different. One thing that is certain is that the graphics are superb and it is full of interesting details. What is disappointing is that there isn’t a bit more explanation of how the game works and its different features. If you do want something a little more ordinary, try the Monster Wins free slot.
