Design and Graphics

The regal theme of Queen of Diamonds is decadent, luxurious and comes with all the trappings of wealth you would expect from an all powerful monarch! The theme is a little reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, both in terms of design and the malign presence of the Queen, who reminded us of the Red Queen and her refrain of “off with his head!”

That said, Queen of Diamonds is truly original. We loved the reel mechanism and the way that cards flip instead of spinning. It’s a neat twist, and all the more dramatic as the Queen stares imperiously over the reels.

She’s incredibly well designed with a touch of surrealism that’s also present on the other characters, including the jester and anthropomorphic playing card soldiers. This slot has a somewhat fairy tale, dreamlike quality.

It’s the bonus features which are especially memorable, though. A giant jester looms out of the screen during the Joker Bonus, and the War Bonus is even more thrilling. Lines of playing card soldiers march to and fro as battle commences. It’s dramatic, beautifully animated and a touch surreal, qualities which sum up Queen of Diamonds perfectly.

We would have liked to see an autoplay option, but given the nature of the reels this doesn’t feel like the glaring omission that it might have been on other slots.

The RTP and volatility of this slot were unfortunately not available when we wrote this review, but we can offer some pointers. Neo Games slots usually fall into the category of medium-high volatility, and RTP tends to hover around 96%.

Turning over just one joker card launches this game. Players must then turn over more cards to increase their payout: the more cards they can turn over, the more they’ll win. However, an assortment of strike cards (playing cards marked with a giant x) are hidden amongst the set, and turning over three of these ends the game.

War Bonus

Easily the most exciting and well designed element of Queen of Diamonds, the War bonus launches if you turn over a queen card during the base game. The player faces the Queen in a one on one battle and must turn over a higher card than her to win. The more times they can do this, the higher the payout.

Final thoughts

Queen of Diamonds is a beautifully surreal and completely unique offering from Neo Games. The developer deserves credit for bringing so many new mechanics to the slot, and delivering one of the best animated bonus games that we’ve ever played.

We loved the general aesthetic, and turning over cards instead of spinning the reels gave the slot a distinct flavour. The War Bonus, complete with armies of marching playing cards, is certainly the highlight, but this slot is endlessly enjoyable in all areas.

With its big top win and easy to trigger bonus games, there are plenty of chances to win, too, so it’s easy to recommend Queen of Diamonds to anybody in search of a touch of magic!
