The tale of Asena

Asena is an ancient shamanic legend that tells the story of the origins of the Ashina clan of the Gokturks. In the story, a boy wounded in battle is brought back to health by a caring she-wolf; later, she falls pregnant by him. Escaping her own persecution by humans, she gives birth to ten half babies-half wolf cubs that become the first tribespeople of the Ashina clan. The she-wolf Asena has continued to be seen as a matriarchal figurehead by the Turkish people.

The story draws parallels with the origins of Rome, where a she-wolf brought up the city's founder, Romulus.
