Theme, Graphics and Soundtrack

The best-looking aspect of this game is its background, which is a wonderful graphic artist’s representation of a vast lake in front of a mountain range. The mountains are coloured in icy blues and the sky dramatic oranges and terracotta hues, while the lake is depicted as infinitely serene. The reels are transparent so the view is unobscured, which is fortunate because the images on the reels are frustratingly cartoonish. There is little or no animation - although there is a slightly unnerving feature which has the grid suddenly looming larger as it spins its way to the bonus game. In the bonus game itself there is still very little of visual interest - no surprises, no humour, no drama.

As for the soundtrack, it is very much Chinese-lite wallpaper music, the old-world sound of which is slightly at odds with the modern mechanical sound effects. In the end it is rather lacking in personality.

According to the makers, Golden Dynasty has an RTP of 93.47per cent, which is below average, although in the settings menu it claims 95% and some sources it put it as high as 97.51 per cent. The variance is unrecorded.

How to Play Golden Dynasty

1. Click the Spin button or press the space bar to start playing using the current Total Bet. 
2. Click Autoplay to start continuous play using your selected bet line. Click the button again (now reading Pause) to stop Auto play at any time.
3. Use the + and - buttons to customize the bet settings per line.

If a developer decides to return to the extremely familiar territory of Ancient China, you might expect them to have a few new ideas to freshen it up. The name Golden Dynasty prepares you for something rather grander than is delivered. There seems nothing dynastic about this - it’s all rather quiet and rustic. It is also quite thin if you’re looking for extras. Not a bad game, but one that has missed a few opportunities.
