Introduction

Konami slots are known more for their bold visual designs than for their innovative features, with Great Moai following this tradition. Its striking looks sit alongside some fairly standard free games and multipliers; however, these are still pretty fun despite their simplicity. One feature that does stand out is the action packed symbols that provide the chance for unmatching adjacent symbols to be replaced with symbols that do match, which could mean you fill one or more of the 30 paylines.

The slot has five reels and three rows. On these reels, you can find 11 regular symbols alongside the wild and scatter. There are the card symbols from nine to ace at the bottom of the paytable, with the themed symbols including the flower, coconut, turtle, mask and Polynesian man. Scatters can be used to trigger free spins and take the form of a pink circle with golden etching. The Moai - iconic statues found on Easter Island - are the wilds and can substitute for symbols other than the scatter. In addition to the regular wild, there is a special wild with a 2x multiplier.

Theme, graphics & soundtrack

Rapa Nui, known in English as Easter Island, is a small island right on the edge of Polynesia. It was claimed by Chile in 1888 but has been inhabited by the Rap Nui people for much longer. What makes the island famous is the Moai. These distinctively styled human statues with their disproportionately large heads were carved between 1250AD and 1500AD and represent deceased ancestors. There are more than 900 Moai in total, which are impressive examples of craftsmanship in addition to being icons of great spiritual significance.

One undoubtable thing you can say about this slot is that it a visual feast, which is partly because of the theme. When you imagine the South Pacific, you think of golden beaches and impossibly blue seas, perhaps with some vivid green jungle in the background. This is exactly what you get here. Bright green plants and vibrant blue reels host strikingly detailed symbols, all of which make you feel like you are really in Polynesia.

Whilst the themed symbols add depth and there are small animations on winning spins to keep you engaged, the soundtrack is a little lacking. This is a small complaint when the rest of the slot looks so good.

How to play Great Moai

It is always nice when a slot clearly labels its buttons. All you need to do is look from left to right under the Great Moai reels and the game controls will probably be self-explanatory:

1. Press ‘help’ and you will open a menu. Your options are to return to the lobby, to mute the volume, to switch turbo mode on or off depending on how fast you want your game, or to open the game info and paytable. This will tell you everything you need to know.

2. Next is a display for your total balance. Keep an eye on this, and make sure that you set yourself some win and loss limits before you start. This is how you make sure your game stays under control.

3. Denom, as you would expect, changes the denomination value of your bet whilst you play.

4. Autoplay can give you between 10 and 500 spins without having to keep your finger hovering on the button.

5. We will skip the big green spin button for a moment so that we can go to the bet adjustor and use the arrows to set a bet per line. If you prefer, you could just click ‘max bet’ to go straight to five.

6. Now you can go back to the big green button in the middle and click to spin. You can’t control where the reels land, so sit back and enjoy the game responsibly.

Bet & win sizes

You choose between one and five for your bet per line, with a maximum 45 credit wager for 30 paylines and the extra features. A look at the paytable will show you the potential wins for each symbol from one credit.

The maximum wins come from matching five symbols:

- Nine, ten, jack and queen: 60.
- King and ace: 75.
- Flower and coconut: 100.
- Turtle and mask: 150.
- Polynesian man: 250.

Overall review

This slot looks gorgeous, which on its own would probably make it worth a spin. It is especially exciting because Polynesia has not received half the attention in slots that China or Ancient Egypt have attracted. Polynesia Beauty slot is one of the few other examples. Great Moai isn’t just style over substance, as there is solid gameplay with an exciting range of extras; however, it would be nice to see these triggered a little more frequently.
