Introduction

Released in May 2020, Happy Hawaiians comes from ReelNRG, a relatively new slot developer founded in 2016. This colourful, bubbly game has the standard five reels with three rows and uses the 243 ways to win payline strategy, where three or more symbols of the same kind can win in any position provided they fall in on consecutive reels starting from the left.

As with most slot game designs, Happy Hawaiians has a Wild that substitutes for all symbols except for the Scatter, and the Scatter is instrumental in triggering the main bonus feature. That's not to say this is a standard game. The Scatter has some quirks of its own, as you'll see later.

How to play

1. When you launch the game, you'll see an intro screen showing its four features. Press play to continue.

2. Get accustomed to the game's rules and controls by clicking or touching the + button. This expands to access information about the game, its rules, features and pay table. From here, you can toggle music on and off or access the game's settings.

3. Choose settings to customise your spin speed, use the space bar for spins, toggle winnings in currency, and set the intro screen display.

4. On the bar below the reels, you can adjust your bet by using the arrows on either side of the amount, or if you prefer, hit the max bet button. You can also toggle your bet amount and balance display as either coins or currency.

5. If you prefer Auto Play, the button to the right of the main spin button will take you to the control panel, where you can set the number of automatic spins as well as win and loss limits.

Graphics and soundtrack

There's a Hawaiian-style party going on here, with steel pans mixed into the music and exotic cocktails, flowers and fruits embellishing the symbols on the reels. Flower petals drift across the game when the 3 Wins bonus is triggered, and the reels glow pink during the Horizontal Spin bonus.

Each win on the reels is accompanied by a flourish from a steel guitar that sounds great on its own but jars somewhat when played over the background music in the base game. Five-of-a-kind wins are flagged up and you'll see coin fountains on the bigger wins. The three Hawaiian girls wearing floral garlands dance or play music when they appear, triggering their random, bonus rounds.

Happy Hawaiians Bonus Features

There are four bonus features in this game. The first three are randomly triggered. After each spin, regardless of whether there was a win or not, one of the three Happy Hawaiians will appear at the side of the reels to start her bonus feature.

Pink Hawaiian - Horizontal Spin

The Pink Hawaiian triggers one free spin only, but the reels will spin horizontally, sometimes resulting in a win.

Blue Hawaiian - Cloned Reel

When the Blue Hawaiian appears, she'll clone the first reel and place it across two of the randomly picked other reels. With the 243 ways to win system, this feature can potentially pick up multiple wins.

Gold Hawaiian - 3 Wins

The Gold Hawaiian grants you a free spins round with unlimited free spins until three wins are reached.

Pearl Free Spins with Multiplier Bonus

The Pearl Free Spins with Multiplier Bonus is the main bonus for this slot and is triggered by the Scatter, which doesn't behave like a standard Scatter. To activate the Pearl Free Spins, a Pearl symbol needs to land in the middle row of reels 2, 3 and 4, but not necessarily all at once.

When a Pearl lands, it activates a Pearl above its reel. You'll be awarded the Free Spins with multiplier when all three Pearls are lit. It's important to note that you shouldn't change your bet if you have lit Pearls or they will be forfeited, and you'll have to start accumulating them again.

With the Free Spins feature awarded, you get to choose how you want to play, either with 15 free spins and a 2x multiplier, 10 free spins with a 3x multiplier, or six free spins with a 5x multiplier. Verdict

With its relatively high RTP and multiple random bonus features, you don't feel like you have to wait long for something to happen in Happy Hawaiians. Its artwork and music contribute to a holiday atmosphere. Although the music and win motifs can be discordant at times, this can be easily remedied by toggling the sound off.
