Rocky’s Gold is the first ever game produced by Northern Lights Gaming, and it’s clear that no expense has been spared in its creation. The playing area is set against a rocky backdrop, where eagles soar above the reels, and occasional tumbleweeds drift past on the ground, while some Wild West melodies tinkle along in the background.

On the reels, you’ll find a host of symbols, including the always popular low-value playing card symbols. These are joined by a selection of coloured rocks in blue, green and red, which award slightly higher prizes, but it’s the game’s logo - RG - depicted in gold that offers the highest returns, closely followed by the game’s Wild, which is also depicted in gold.

The controls to the game have been kept minimal, so even if this is your first ever experience of playing an online slots game, you won’t have much difficulty in understanding how it works. The game features 20 fixed paylines, so as the player, your only decision is how much to wager for each spin. Bets are placed per line, so your wager is multiplied by 20 for each spin, but don’t worry about keeping track, as all the information that you need is displayed across the bottom of the playing area.

How To Win at Rocky's Gold Slot

Players need to line up three or more matching symbols across one of the 20 paylines to win a prize, with the first symbol appearing on the reel furthest to the left of the playing area, and subsequent symbols appearing on the payline across adjacent reels. This applies for all of the symbols apart from the RG, which starts paying out cash awards for attaining just two matches on a payline.

Don’t panic if you don’t have enough matching symbols to achieve a win, as the game’s Wild, which also comes with its own paytable, can substitute for most other symbols in the game, other than Bonus and Scatters. 

You can access the game’s paytable at any time during play - just look for the ‘?’ icon at the top right-hand side of your screen. This paytable is particularly helpful, since it alters the paytable according to your current bet level, so you can see at a glance the rewards you can expect to win for matching three or more symbols across a payline. For example, at the minimum wager level of 0.20, the RG symbol pays out 0.04 for matching two on a payline, and 5.00 for five of a kind.

This game has three separate bonuses, one of which can be randomly triggered at any time. This is the Wild Bonus which can occur at any time following a non-winning spin. Rocky himself will appear on the reels, carrying a stick of dynamite in an attempt to skew the odds in your favour. The Wild Bonus comes in three variants. Rocky may carry a single stick of dynamite, which will replace one of the symbols on the reels with a Wild. Or Rocky may bring more than one stick of dynamite, so that he can turn more than one symbol Wild. Rocky could even bring his giant stick of dynamite, that can turn an entire block of symbols Wild.

The TNT Bonus only occurs on the third and fourth reels of the game. When the detonator symbol appears on the third reel, the space next to it on the fourth reel is highlighted, and you’ll see an extra symbol appear on that reel. This is a box of dynamite, and your goal is for it to land next to the detonator in the highlighted box. When this happens, Rocky will depress the plunger, exploding the dynamite, which will turn one low-value symbol on the reels into a high-value symbol. He’ll keep on blowing up the lower value symbols until he blows himself up, hopefully leaving you with some impressive payline wins.

The Paydirt Bonus introduces the game’s Scatter, which is a wooden chest with the word Bonus written across it, topped by Rocky’s hat. The aim of the player is to achieve at least two of these symbols on the reels, where they’ll trigger the Pick Me Bonus. Click or tap on one of the chests, and you’ll be awarded either a cash prize, or you’ll be granted 5 Free Spins in the Paydirt Bonus round. Three or more of the Bonus Scatters will take you straight to the Paydirt Bonus, with three chests awarding you 10 Free Spins, four chests awarding you 15 Free Spins and five chests giving the maximum of 20 Free Spins.

The Paydirt Bonus Free Spins take place on a separate set of reels. Here you are taken below ground, where Rocky is crushing giant boulders in the hope of unearthing gold. As the reels spin, giant rocks tip out onto a conveyor belt in front of them, while Rocky pulls with all his might on a lever to crush them. As the rocks explode, they uncover Wilds and multipliers, which greatly increase your chances of scooping a cash award.
