Introduction

Chinese Opera is an exciting game made by KA Gaming slots that uses an oriental operatic theme. Played on 5 reels with 4 rows, the game has 1024 paylines and is made more fun and enticing with the inclusion of both free spins and an additional Rolling Lamp bonus game.

There are 11 regular symbols in the game, including a man holding a sword, a lady holding a fan, and lady holding a sword; these 3 are tall symbols that occupy 4 rows. The other regular symbols include 4 masks (in red, blue, green, and white), a sword, a headdress, a fan, and a table.

The game has a wild and a scatter symbol in play too. The wild is another full-length symbol that will always nudge down to fill the reel and is depicted by a masked figure brandishing a sword. In addition to substituting for everything but the scatter, the wilds will apply a 2x multiplier to one colour of mask if they help to make a winning combination with masks.

The scatter symbol is the tea cup with tea spilling out, and it can grant players passage into the free spins round.

For any players who might be thinking about playing this slot with real money, it’s a good idea to play the demo game above to get some idea of the variance and whether you like the game.

Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

The oriental theme is based on the Chinese opera and has a whole host of operatic characters waiting to put on a show. The masks are a popular feature of Chinese opera, and we see four of them in play on the reels.

The graphics are beautiful and the background features a very picturesque scene set on the stage with the curtains open. A subtle amount of animation adds movement to the game, such as when the symbols that land make a winning combination.

The soundtrack only plays once a reel spin is initiated, at which point we’re greeted with a traditional Chinese melody plucked out on what sounds like a lute. This feels very realistic and helps to set the scene.

Chinese Opera RTP and Variance

At 96.04 RTP, Chinese Opera’s theoretical return to player is deemed fairly average compared to other online slots. It is, however, a high-variance slot that offers some large potential payouts that do not pay out very frequently.

How to Play Chinese Opera

Get in on the act in a few short steps.

  1. Begin by selecting your preferred bet level. Press the ‘New Bet’ button to the right of the start button to reveal your wagering options.
  2. Now that your bet’s configured, the pay table will show potential prizes based on your bet amount. Press the ‘i’ symbol in the bottom right to view it now.
  3. If you prefer, switch off audio by pressing the hamburger menu icon, followed by the speaker symbol.
  4. For players who prefer to use auto-spin, press and hold the start button to configure auto-spin settings and start the spinning.
  5. If you prefer manual spins (better for players who want to be able to see per-spin wins more easily), press the start button when ready.
  6. Remember to always gamble responsibly. Slots Temple deploys timeouts and self-exclusion tools to assist, but you must always stop if the fun stops.

Bet Sizes & Paytable Wins

The minimum total bet you can wager is 1.00 and the maximum total bet level is 100.00. This allows players to set themselves a comfortable and appropriate bet level.

As mentioned in the game rules, the paytable will reflect your particular bet level. However, for the maximum bet level and when matching 5 symbols, some of the top paytable wins include:

  • 500 on the teacup scatters
  • 220 on the man holding a sword
  • 200 on the lady holding the fan

Do note, however, that scatter wins are always multiplied by the total bet level, but all other wins are multiplied by the per-line bet.

Chinese Opera Bonus Features

There is a free spins round available in Chinese Opera. This is accessible only when landing 3, 4, or 5 of the elusive teacup scatter symbols anywhere in view and would award 8, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively.

In addition to the free spins, there’s also the Rolling Lamp Bonus Game. This can trigger any time during spins and will present players with a fun game featuring a teetering clown with a lamp precariously balanced upon his head. Players must scroll left or right to help the lamp remain on the clown’s head. It’s harder than it looks!

Overall Chinese Opera Review

Overall, we enjoyed our time spent playing Chinese Opera. We thought the theme was nice and fairly well done and found it to be a pleasant surprise. The addition of the Rolling Lamp Bonus Game definitely made things more interesting, despite how tricky it turned out to be. We quite liked the comical clown but liked it a bit less when the lamp landed on the floor.

The game rules were simple enough to understand, which would make the game a decent place for beginners to have some fun. However, the variance is quite high and the free spins round seemed to take forever to access; those teacups sure are rare!
For players who like straightforward gameplay, why not also try KA Gaming's Nine Lucks slot? With only 9 paylines and a 3x3 grid, it could be an interesting one.
