Christmas Party dispenses with the reels that we associate with online slots and uses the technology now available to create a very different game of chance. Instead of reels, the game features six characters, each seated at their own table in a very contemporary bar, plus the barman as the seventh. The minimum bet is 0.10 and the maximum is 500.00. The characters are a red panda, Santa’s helper, the deathless king, the she-devil, a penguin, a knight and Santa as the barman.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Unlike most seasonal free casino slots, the Christmas theme is very lightly done and partly disguises a very adult game of chance. There's no reindeer or Christmas trees - just a set of interestingly drawn and variously odd characters, including a Santa whose appearance is part pirate, part woodsman. The music is laid-back late-night lounge stuff and the sound effects are slight. It’s all rather well-done.

How to play Christmas Party

1. The aim of the game is to win the prize cocktail. When you press "play", each of the six seated characters receives a boxed gift. You have to select one or press "random" for the game to choose one for you.
2. To win the maximum prize, you need to progress through three stages. At each stage, you can select only one box. If you reveal a bottle with a multiplier, you have successfully completed that stage. Your bet will be increased by this multiplier and the contents of the bottle will become part of the prize cocktail. You can then move on to the next stage.
3. If you prefer, after winning a stage, you can gamble what you have won by clicking "bet" or save your winnings by clicking "gamble".
4. After you have chosen a box, its contents will be revealed, along with the contents of the boxes you didn’t choose. If you reveal an ice cube, you have lost.
5. The prize cocktail glass is on the bar, looked after by Santa. As you win each stage, an extra level is added to the drink in the glass.
6. The bet value is displayed on the left side of the screen. You adjust the total bet using the plus and minus symbols on either side. You can also open the bet settings by clicking on the bet itself.
7. Unlike the majority of free casino slots, there is no autoplay option. This is because the player is required to make a choice or a random selection after each turn to determine whether they have won anything.
8. There is no auto play mode, so there aren't advanced autoplay settings.
9. Click the play button or press the space bar to play. 
10. The credit balance is displayed at the bottom right of the screen, and the figure will be adjusted after every turn.

Consolation Drink

If you chose a box with a multiplier and a bottle in the first round but you are unsuccessful in the second or third round, the Consolation game will launch. In this game, you are given a choice between two boxes on the bar. If you choose the one containing an ice cube, you lose. If you choose the consolation drink, you will win back 50% of your bet that would otherwise have been lost. This is not available in the first round.

Christmas Party review: our verdict

With no paytable, no reels, and no bonus game, you might think this would be dull, but it actually works pretty well as a gambling game that forces you to participate at every turn instead of just watching the reels land. The RTP is good, although the maximum payout lets it down.
