Introduction

Slots games based around historical events always tend to be popular with gaming fans. And developers are happy to approach the theme in a variety of ways. We’ve enjoyed the cartoon-style take adopted by the fun Micro Knights slot, but now it’s time to try out a more bloodthirsty game, with the beautifully-crafted Hussars slot.

Everyone talks about the Spartans who battled seemingly insurmountable odds of just 300 warriors against the entire Persian army. But the infamous Winged Hussars of Poland found themselves even more heavily outnumbered by Russian and Mongolian forces. In fact, just 400 Hussars fought and successfully defeated massed forces of more than 25,000 soldiers.

The Hussars were an advance cavalry force, that depended heavily on surprise to defeat their enemies. They were known as the Winged Hussars thanks to the elaborate feathered wings they wore on their backs. It’s said that they resembled an army of avenging angels when they went on the attack, their wings making a terrifying clattering sound that terrified the enemy into submission.

Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

We haven’t played many Promatic slots, but already we know that the developer excels at graphics. And this is demonstrated to great effect in Hussars, with superb use of colour and imagery. The background scene is of a battlefield, complete with fallen and dying soldiers. Tattered banners flap in the breeze to either side of the reels, which are filled with Hussar equipment, including swords, lances, shields, armour, helmets and the iconic Winged Hussar crest.

The soundtrack is a stirring orchestral affair, which adds to the overall ambience. The game has inbuilt volume controls and sound settings, so you can adjust the music and game sounds according to your exact preferences.

Hussars RTP & Volatility

The RTP of 96.48% puts Hussars above the average when it comes to theoretical returns. But don’t go rushing off to your favourite online casino to try the game out just yet. It’s classified as being a medium-volatility slot so you’re almost certainly going to have to wait quite some time before the big wins start lining up on the reels.

How to Play Hussars

1 Select the amount of your stake from the options shown in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

2 When you’re ready to start your game, hit the central Spin button.

3 Use the Max Bet to play Hussars at maximum stakes.

4 Autoplay lets you play up to 100 automatic spins at your current stake. You can set optional win and loss amounts to end the feature sooner. Clicking on Autoplay during the feature will deactivate it and return the spin control back to a manual setting.

5 The Settings button gives access to the game’s paytable, rules and sound settings. You can mute specific game sounds, or the backing track, or play in complete silence if you prefer.

Bet Sizes & Paytable Wins

Although there are five paylines that cross the reels of Hussars, the wagering system is extremely simple. You can play from just 0.10 per spin, rising to maximum stakes of 10.00 per spin. That’s not going to be drawing in any of the high-stakes players, but it gives most other types of slots fans a decent betting range.

To win a cash prize you’ll need to match up three or more symbols across one of the five paylines. There’s a Win Both Ways mechanic with this game, so paylines from right to left as well as the usual left to right. Cash prizes are shown in the paytable as multiples of your total stake, as follows:

Hussars Bonus Features

Bonus features are a little thin on the reels of Hussars, but if you love Expanding Wild symbols you’ll appreciate what the game has to offer. The Wild Hussar symbol substitutes for all the other symbols in the game, so it can help to create winning lines for you with every appearance. But wherever the Wild lands, it expands to fill the entire reel, giving even more winning chances.

Once a Wild has become an Expanding Wild Reel, it triggers two Scatter Spins. These have to be paid for, but with the Wild Reel held in place there’s a good chance of landing some winning combinations. And if you land another Wild, you’ll receive a free Respin too!

Any win can be gambled. Select a winning side for the Hussar to charge, and if he wins, you double the value of your win. But if he loses, you lose the win too.

Overall Review

There’s a great deal to like about playing Hussars, not least the spectacular graphics and soundtrack. The game has an excellent RTP and the betting range makes it suitable for all but the highest-stake slots fans. Our only reservation is the lack of bonus features. The Expanding Wild can generate some decent cash prizes, but the Scatter Spins don’t come free, and we never managed to trigger a Respin during our gaming session. So although it’s a game well worth playing, we advise trying it out for free before rushing off to an online casino.
