Introduction
You’re going to need a wetsuit for this one. No reels, no paylines, just an underwater scene full of fish that you need to capture with your cannon. KA Gaming have created an innovative game that has its own distinct style, including four types of bonus symbol, and if you can figure out the rules it’s full of excitement.
Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack
If you want to dive into an underwater world, then it doesn’t come much more immersive than King Octopus. You plunge to the seabed, settle amongst the shimmering light and currents of the constantly flowing water, and as you wait a diverse range of fish in strange shapes and bright colours start to swim past. There’s even a mermaid. You also see some of the things that are meant to stay on the surface but sometimes get swallowed by the ocean, including pirates, treasure chests and shipwrecks.
Everything is constantly moving, from the water to the creatures, and after you’ve been playing for a while you’ll move to a new area of the seabed with a new combination of coral and caves and wrecks to survey. The music also provides constant energy with an unrelenting soundtrack interspersed with a man’s deep laugh. With no reels to distract you, this game is entirely about its setting and the impression it leaves.

King Octopus RTP and Variance
With such an unusual format, it’s not wonder that King Octopus doesn’t follow the standard rules for these kinds of game. That means, unlike more regular KA Gaming slots, there’s no official RTP and variance information, because you can’t assess King Octopus in the same way you would a slot with spinning reels. That means the only way to get a feel for both the gameplay and the likely wins is to give the free demo a try on a site like Slots Temple and see if you enjoy it.
How to Play King Octopus
Breathing apparatus on? This might take a little more explaining than normal, so make sure you read it through carefully:
- When you first load the game, you’ll be given three options. There’s a turtle, a whale and a pirate octopus, which represent a low, medium or high bet level respectively. Choose which one you prefer. You may notice your cursor is shaped like a target.
- Once you’ve selected, you’ll move to the main screen, and now it becomes apparent that this isn’t just a slot. For one thing, there’s a big empty space where the reels should be and no Spin buttons.
- The buttons that do exist are labelled. If you change your mind and want to go to a different mode, you can use the Options button, which is on the left and looks like an arrow. Here you’ll also find your game history.
- There are buttons at the very topmost corners that you may have noticed were available when you were still on the Options screen. One returns you to the homepage; the other is a Menu button with one setting - the mute control for the volume.
- Down at the bottom left you’ll find your current balance and bet, with the usual plus and minus symbols to adjust it.
- If you just want to get straight into playing, all you need to do is point and click. Your “cannon” is at the bottom of the screen, and as you move your cursor it will aim at your fish of choice. Every time you fire you spend some of your bet. If you successfully take out a fish, you win gold coins.
- For a guide to fish and features, go to the paytable, linked on the right of the screen.
- Over here you’ll also find two different playing options. “Lock” will allow you to choose a specific fish to target, whilst “Auto” will keep you continuously firing in one direction.
Bet & Win Sizes
Each room/level has a different bet range:
Bronze/Turtle - 0.01 - 0.10
Silver/Whale - 0.10 - 1.00

There are 22 regular symbols plus five Underwater Kings that can award a random prize within a certain range. The smallest fish (in both size and value) pay 2x or 3x, and then you steadily increase until you reach the highest-paying regular symbols:
Ray - 30x
Whale - 35x
Swordfish - 40x
Spiky Blue Fish - 45x
Yellow Shark - 50x
Pirate - 60x
Then there are the Underwater Kings in gold:

Octopus - 68x - 168x
Ship - 68x - 268x
Pirate Octopus - 68x - 368x
King Octopus Bonus Features
No reels means no free spin feature, but there are four types of bonus symbol in King Octopus:
Freeze Treasure Box - All fish are frozen in ice and can’t move whilst you’re awarded a random prize up to 50x.
Drill Weapon - This is a special device that attacks only once but with ferocious power that could take out many fish before exploding.
Jellyfish Sprites - Many fish will be destroyed at once during a chain reaction.
Gunpowder Barrel - There will be a big explosion destroying the surrounding fish.
King Octopus Review
If you like fishing and immersive graphics, King Octopus may appeal to you. If you’d prefer a more standard slot with that theme, the Octopus Treasure slot may be more your style. Some people may also recoil slightly at having to shoot the cuter animals, like the baby turtle, whilst others will find the energetic action a great thrill. It’s definitely one you need to try for yourself.
